Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

PDF Report With Random Blank Data

I've got a rather lengthy report (Invoice) that is designed to print to PDF. I recently got a call from a client saying that something strange was going on, in particular, even though the totals were correct various line items were with blank charge amounts.

I've attached a section of a sample invoice in which you can see the problem (this is only one sub-section, there are a few others with the same issue).

    2015-12-11_16-13-36.jpg

The total displayed is in fact correct, it's just that some of the amounts aren't showing. The line items are actually in an embedded sub-report as they contain the many side of a typical one-many relationship.

I've checked the data (in a MySQL database) and the amounts are there. I've tried changing the PDF options to use the Microsoft XPS driver, same exact problem. Curious thing is, if I try editing the master report and then run it from within the Report Designer, all amounts print out properly.

If a better printer driver would solve this problem I'd gladly use it, I guess I'm fortunate that at least the total invoice amount is correct. Regardless, I've got to figure out a way to fix this, pronto.

Any experiences or additional information would be appreciated.

    Things to try:

    1) expand the width of the field. If the field gets too full it might be printing as blank.

    2) Put an X (text) on either side of the field - just to see it. If the x on both sides prints, but the field does not print - well that's just weird, but it might tell you something.

    3) Move the number to the left of the page - again, just as a test - does it disappear there too?

    4) In the properties of the field, make sure there are no dynamic hide features going on.

      Larry:

Thanks for your suggestions, they're really the sensible things to do and I've done most all of them, in one form or another, already. But when the preview in the designer shows no problems, HTML output shows no problems but PDF output generates random missing data, it's time to move on. :) I converted the project report to one based on DBF tables and now I have no issues. This app is too important to me to trust these reports to Alpha and their ProjectReport/Subreport/PDF mechanism. I need something reliable. I don't have these issues in C# with a third party template product, I can't afford them here.

As I say, as long as I know where to step, I can use Alpha to deploy many (though not all) of my apps. But when I hit a pothole and can't get a solution, workaround or even confirmation of my own error on these Boards then I look for an alternative. For me it was DBF-based reports. Should I run into a project where I cannot use this type of report then I will turn to C#.

Again, thanks for taking the time to offer your suggestions.
