Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Sitemaps for you website and SEO checker

Some people build their own, some don't know or care about them, but:

They are a helpful way for search engines to crawl your website in a more productive way and thus get the data into almost all their databases. It helps with SEO and traffic generated by a search.

Having over 30 websites that I have to keep up and more being built right now, it helps to have something pretty automatic that also works real well.

I found this in Google and it is here: https://www.xml-sitemaps.com/ Just type in the URL to your site and they will generate a complete sitemap in a minute or two as html, xml and a bout 3 more.

They also have a paid version that runs about 50.00 a year if you have a high volume and high change site. I have one of those so I get a new set of files daily instead of opting for the automatic to the site system. It also gives me many more files. But, most sites don't need the paid for version and that is free.

I just can't justify the time it takes to write the sitemap.xml + others and then spend a bunch of time modifying them as things change.

NO, I don't get anything if you use it

For SEO: Use http://www.seocentro.com/tools/seo/seo-analyzer.html it is free and yes, I have made donations. All sites I build is checked here as they are built. Very helpful.

Please don't hesitate to add your own sites that help all.

I don't think it will work on sites build with pure NodeJS implementaion for CMS etc i think Google Analistics will do a better job while Googie does not use meta tags anymore these days, just reference your api keys further advice Google News is a good trick.

You are right about the meta-keys(keywords). It is a bad sign if you are thinking of some seo company and they are talking about keywords.
Google analytics is ok to get an idea of percentages, but the numbers are dead wrong. Tested that in real life.
Google still does look at meta descriptions and if they match titles that rep the content, it is a bit helpful. I have placed ads with title, metatag and content matching on a classified site and found it on page 5 google in less than 5 days.
Good SEO and Sitemaps never hurt any site.
I will look again at google news. Thanks

Lots of things do if you pay.
I do a lot of facebook group posts, and a lot of back links. Have to be careful of backlinks though. Too many can hurt you.
Best to watch where you place things too. I have a site called upslogs. The reason for the name is that in the car business, all new customers are called ups and you have to log them in = upslogs.
Over the years, dealers and salespeople do a search on google for ups logs, upslogs, upslog, I generally am on 1st page to 5th page.
Most car sales type forums have upslogs.com as a backlink. It does help traffic a bit. The app sold there is written in alpha.

Re: Sitemaps for you website and SEO checker

Keywords are not ignored, they are however for ranking purposes, which makes sense. Two pages with a keyword of "flour" makes neither more relevant or likely that one page will rank higher because they have MORE or less keywords. Google, or any other search engine will still "spider" that part of the page and that data is collected. As their algorithm changes all the time, I still think it would be a good idea to use keywords as they were designed to be used in the first place and that's it.
Meta tag and Alt tag your images, Create an appropriate title, use your H-tags and create interesting content. Trust me your website does NOT need to be perfect or "modern" looking to rank well - my horrible looking websites outrank much better looking sites all the time.

The single most important thing I have found is to get listed as a local business, submit it to google maps, get a gmail account, setup analytics and an adwords account - NOW your a google customer and from what I can tell they tend to outrank the website that isn't unless there's something special about it to begin with.

I built a webpage - showing my daughter how one could easily build a page about bat removal. I optimised it for the long tailed search term "Bat Removal New Orleans" I started by searching that term first and analyzed the word count on the top 3 web returns, the titles and the alt tags (notice I did not even mention keywords) within 3 days that single page website - with 1 image ranked number one on bing and yahoo - google 3rd.

Today, I still rank very high for that exact search term - age of domain helps.

Now, that example was based on a LONG -TAILED search phrase - and I think those are important steps for FUTURE ranking as your website builds trust and age, and more visitors!

So that's my thoughts on SEO. Hope it helps someone, your results may vary - lol.

Charles is pretty much right. Search google for upslogs which is a car dealership term and you will find my site somewhere on the first page and it has been there for a lot of years.
              Ups = potential clients
logs used to be the book you kept a record of your customers

People used to come to dealers selling actual Upslog books. The books were named UpsLogs.

                Hi,
I've been doing exactly what Dave said in the opening post above, i.e. by coincidence I stumbled across xml-sitemaps and let them produce an xml sitemap for me. I host my website internally and placed the xml sitemap on my server in the A5webroot folder. Unfortunately it can't be seen, i.e. typing in my URL/sitemap.xml produces a 403 forbidden code.

Xml-sitemaps has a very responsive help desk and they advised me that they couldn't see it either - they also advised me to contact my web hosting support... which is of course... me! And that has so far proved to be a complete waste of time!! ;)

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Sitemaps for you website and SEO checker

A short while ago key words again became a part of google. I use https://www.xml-sitemaps.com. The free version generates 4 types. xml being one of them. The best is the .xml version, but to show, use the html version. Most of my sites have a connection url to the html if some visitor wishes to see it. I basically dump all four of the files into the folder. They are small and not harmful.
Some search engines use the urllist.txt.
Below are the first 2 lines of many on one of my sites:
                    http://aldaweb.com/
                    http://aldaweb.com/index.php
                    http://aldaweb.com/index.php/alda-pricing

                    http://aldaweb.com/index.php/hikasho...ting/product/2

All should be renewed on any changes/ once a month anyhow. Just remembered, I made a couple changes on my main site, so renewing sitemaps now. Takes about 8-10 minutes work for each site.

                        Hi Ted,
I don't totally understand your comments - I will study them again shortly. However, I omitted to mention that due to SSL issues, I run two instances of WAS. One on port 80 and the other on port 443. (One is http and the other https). Maybe your port forwarding comment is therefore at the heart of my problem. Re my server not "actually public yet" is where my confusion is. www.m-press.biz has been live for several years. I guess I'm not understanding something here.

Your web site might be accessible, but that isn't the same as being public.
In my tests, a site on my personally hosted server does not register on Google. The address is direct, so no search engines.
If you allow bots into your personal server then they will pick up the details and then people will find you.
I chose not to do that and use Smarterasp.net at around

I'm not sure what the rest of you are talking about but Larry, but if you are getting "403 forbidden" then the page is found but forbidden by security. You just need to go to Alpha Web Security > Page Security > File Types Always Allowed and add "xml". Then publish security, and either wait 5 minutes or restart your Alpha web server for the change to take effect.
