Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha broken in Win10 and Office 2016 so can you locate Winword.Exe using Xbasic

    Does anybody know of a way to find the precise location of winword.exe on a given machine.

    THE REASON - the RTF export in Alpha when run on a Windows 10 machine using Office 2016 no longer works properly. Our application relies on a number of template letters which users generate and export to an RTF which they then open in Word (or any other RTF editor) to personalise each letter.

    This has worked perfectly for us for years until now. The problem lies with the Amyuni driver that ships within Alpha and even the new Version 5 of this does not work. The RTF it exports is all in frames and is impossible to edit. Alpha's response has been to say nobody uses RTF anymore (please reply to this thread if you are a user who does) and for this I am expected to pay an annual subscription !!!!!!!!!

    The only solution is that all recent versions of Word will convert a PDF into an editable DOCX file but of course Alpha only wants to open PDF's using whatever PDF reader is associated with that format but it is possible to create a line of script to open the PDF export with Word but it does rely on knowing the precise path to Winword.exe on a given machine.

    Any help will be greatly appreciated.

          Hi Bob

          You can run from a cmd prompt

          reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\WINWORD.EXE"

          This will return the location path which you could then grab?

          So modifying Finian's code that Stan has linked to should return the current version

            Thanks Al that works in that it opens word but I need to add the path to a pdf file for it to open and that only works if you know the full path to winword.

                Thanks all - the method that seems to work is

                Registry.sys_get("HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\WINWORD.EXE")

                  I was just going to post...

                  mywinword=registry.sys_get("HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\WinWord.exe")
                  ?mywinword
                  = "C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~1\Office14\WINWORD.EXE"

                  Now trying to get a dot variable loaded from registry.load_settings()

                  But that function is limited to the Alpha area of the registry for the version of Alpha that you are running.

                  In this case, you need to read the machine info....

                  So to get the pretty path.... add "\Path" to the registry key

                  mywinword=registry.sys_get("HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\WinWord.exe\Path")

                  ?mywinword
                  = "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14"
