Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Port Knocking has anyone implemented this

    I am designing a desktop app and working on an update option and i don't want to leave the ftp ports open when not needed. I use a linux mysql backend and i don't see any posts even remotely close. I'm going to see if I can find a 3rd party command line to run from alpha if thats my only choice. I have seen the sockets and other datagram option i may be able to make alpha do it's own port knocking if i know what the server is looking for when the port is knocked.

    Ok so i found out that i need to send a SYN packet to 3 ports configured on the server. There is no reply from the server when these packets are sent. When they are received in the correct order the ports on the server opens to the ip address that requested by knocking. any help figuring out how to use sockets with this would be awesome.

    Sending a SYN packet is a lower-level socket operation than what is available in Xbasic. You will not be able to do this using Xbasic sockets.

      Thanks For replying Lenny I have found a command line app that will do the knocking for me using the sys_shell() command

      here is a sample of the code so if anyone else is looking for this type of approach.

      I had to get an app from http://blog.philippklaus.de/2009/02/...port-knocking/ and here is the code
      Code:
      sys_shell("c:\knock\knock-win32-port\Release\knock.exe 192.168.1.149 7000 8000 9000")

      'Displays a message box (style:'OK Button', image: 'Information symbol', id: 'kn').
      DIM SHARED  kn_result as N
      DIM SHARED  kn_OK_Button as L
      kn_OK_Button = .F.

      title_var = ""
      message_text_var = <<%text%
      Port is OPEN
      %text%
      kn_result=ui_msg_box(title_var,message_text_var,UI_OK+ UI_FIRST_BUTTON_DEFAULT+ UI_INFORMATION_SYMBOL)
      'Test to see which button on the message box was pressed....
      SELECT
      	CASE kn_result = UI_OK_SELECTED
      		kn_OK_Button= .t.
      END SELECT
      sys_shell("c:\knock\knock-win32-port\Release\knock.exe 192.168.1.149 9000 8000 7000")
      this will just knock the ports and when complete open a dialog telling you they are open after you click ok the command runs to close the ports. Hope this is helpful for someone other than me.

        The SYS_SHELL_WAIT() function runs a command and waits until it is completed before returning control to Alpha Five.
