Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Client-Side Data Cache Editor - Filter on SQL?

Looking at the pre-release client-side data cache I see the filter property in the editor on the SQL cache definition. It mentions that you can link the filter to a control value.

Does that mean it's retrieving the whole set to the client and applying the filter client-side or is that filter applied server side and limiting what gets sent to the client?

Just trying to reduce the transfer needs on a disconnected app.

    Thanks,
    Dean

As I understand it, works the same as other components - it's making a call against the database in my (case SQL Server) and returns the result of the query from the server to the cache.

I understand that this filter option is used to filter data already in cache. No impact to serverside.

Lol. The sql in the client side data cache editor brings the rows to the device. After the rows are downloaded the action javascript client side data cache actions can be used to read data without an ajax callback. A filter can be supplied in the form of: columnname=={dialog.object}.getValue('some field'). All names are case sensitive. The downloaded rows can be used to populate a textbox, list control or drop down. Very flexible.

Re: Client-Side Data Cache Editor - Filter on SQL?

Sorry, I should have answered my own question after I did some research. I get distracted easily.

I got impatient so I hooked up SQL Profiler to watch the SQL Server and saw that by defining an Argument in the Client-Side Data Cache Editor to refer to a control value I could have it only pull a subset of data server-side on my SQL Statement. In the following statement :ChangeTime is my argument on the query defined in the editor.

SELECT NFCEmployeeID FROM NFCEmployee Where ServerDate > :ChangeTime ORDER BY NFCEmployeeID

So that will reduce the data transferred back across, but yes....The filter will help only read specifics from that if I want to. Thank you all for the replies.

May be good to remember that this is a PRO feature so 1000 more per license.

Fact is - if your first (or only) UX component in PhoneGap that uses a dropdown or any other form of selecting and option other the the list component, you need the cache - no alternative - imagine a dropdown with just Mr and Miss in it - if that's what it was when you published in PhoneGap, then that's how it will stay as an app, even if you enter the Mrs into the database - you would then need to republish you PhoneGap App for it to appear, that's not going to cut it for offline. If your serious about this you will need to ensure your client understands what's involved.
