Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Export a character field containing Line-Feed to a .CSV file

    Hello All,
    I am trying to export a table to a .CSV text file. There is a character field that contains Line-Feeds .This field is exported without line-feeds even though it is surrounded by double-quotes .
    Here is the Way I assign the field :

    C_field=""" + "Tracking No:"+ Crlf() + Var->Tracking_list + """

    "Var->Tracking_list" is a <Crlf> delimited list . What am I doing wrong?
    I appreciate any help or suggestion,I can't find a way to it.
    Thanks,
    Nick

    Re: Export a character field containing Line-Feed to a .CSV file

    The line feed is the normal line termination character for a csv file. Probably won't be able to get around that unless you change it in the Alpha export specification.
    There can be only one.

      Thanks Stan, I need to import the CSV file in to another application (sage 50 accounting) and the format must be terminated this way .
      Is there another way of creating this text file?
      Thanks,
      Nick

        Can you Show us what Sage expects the file to eventually look like?

          Re: Export a character field containing Line-Feed to a .CSV file

          This is the required format : "You must include a file header, specifying the fields (identifiers) you intend to import. Then each new record must start on a new line and each value must be separated from the next by a comma."

          When I open the exported Csv file with notepad I see that the
          Line-feeds are not exported but each record is otherwise correct so
          Alpha is not confused by the line-feeds, they are just replaced by a space.

            In your export definition try using the line

            export.record_sep = "<CR><LF>"

              These are the settings I already have:
              export.options = "LT"
              export.field_sep = ","
              export.record_sep = "<CR><LF>"

                I included a N in options (export.options = "LTN") as it say in Alpha documentation to "preserve line breaks" ,With no effect .
                In the Alpha help documents the "N" in the options is supposed to preserve line breaks ,but apparently that is not the case .I wonder if that a bug.

                  The built it export can only export a single record at a time it appears that you are trying to create multiple records from a single record. You would need to create a temp table where each record is a single record and export that table or write the csv file with xbasic.

                    Thanks Allen, No I am just trying to export a Meno field .If you look at the Tbl.Export() method in the help documents it should be possible to export a Memo field with Line breaks preserved if you
                    include a "N" in the options.

                      We have a number of routines for transferring data to various versions of Sage.
                      PM me for more details.
