Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

My application close itself after I open it

Hi guys, I'm in a real mess.

my alpha five application doesn't want to open.

I modified it and when I put it back in the production, it doesn't work anymore.

    It's got a login window before to access the main menu, and when I enter the real login details;
    everything just disappears.

Please can you help? or even show me where to find the .log file.

    Good day!

Hold the Ctrl and Shift keys down when starting the app. When the option window opens, select "do not run autoexc". If you also have it open a start-up form the select "Do not open the Start-up Form" as well. This should allow you to get into the backend.

Re: My application close itself after I open it

Thanks a lot, I can now get into the backend but the problem has not been solved yet.

Indeed, I don't know how to thank you as I seached for a Forum like this one for 3 weeks and found nothing.
Alpha Five is really not a popular software, and it's difficult to find a lot of people using it.
Most of the Web site I found comments were published 6 years ago.
But I kept searching and suddenly I landed into your web-site/Forum.

Basically I'm not a Alpha Five Programmer but I develop in other programming languages.
I have basic understanding of Alpha Five and I also developed my own test app 3 week ago and it's working perfectly, and I also browse the manual.

In my company we have got a CRM built in Alpha Five that was running perfectly until the day touched it.
The Alpha Five programmer who built that CRM left the company, and during that period he left he was adding an option for the Marketing Department in the CRM,
unfortunatly he did not succed to complete that option before he leaves.
so he gave me the source of the application and told me to continue with that because it was just some buttons to add on that Form that was remaining.

He showed me what to do once I complete that application, and told me to copy and paste it in the server once done.

I did what he told me but unfortunately when I ran the app. in the server after pasting it, it started behaving strangely (the login details was not working anymore)

I asked for help and you responded.

I can work into the backend but when I try to run the app, I still get that password dialog,
and when I enter the correct login details the application close itself and when I enter the wrong one I got an error (of course like usually)

and the password it requesting its a different one, it's not the one for the master database (the one we set to : Tools / Set Security),
i think he created that password window manually... but i can't find that Form/browse/Code in the source to take it out.

I really don't know how to cope with that, that's why I'm asking for help.

If you contact Alpha Support they may be able to help you disable the security and rebuild it. Which is probably not a discussion to have on this board.

The built in security log in will shut you down every time you enter user name or password incorrectly.

Bottom line is that the user and/or password you have is incorrect?
If he built the login himself and did not use the built in security, it is probably activated in the autoexec script or in the on init of the main form/menu somewhere.

            Freesix

If he used the built in Alpha security which it sounds like he did and you have the master password you can go into the control panel the way I stated above and then in the Tools/Security select "Remove Workspace Password". This will remove it for now and will eliminate the need to log in while you are debugging the app. You can turn the security back on after you find the problem shutting the app down.

I agree with Dave that I would start looking in the Autoexec script. But I would also look under File/Workspace Properties and if it specifies a Startup Form, remove that setting for now. Also remove the "Hide Control Panel" setting if checked.

Edit the autoexec script. If it has 'Password = at the top, remove it for now and then add debug(1)

Now start the app and when the debugger window opens, keep clicking "Step" while watching what line it is on. When and if the app shuts down it should give you an idea of about what line the problem starts.

If all else fails and you want me to look at it, just PM me or email me.

Re: My application close itself after I open it

Hi everybody, thanks for your help.

I tried all the step you suggested me unfortunatly it's still not solving the problem.

Under File/Workspace, the startup form is "Main" Form,

and in the control panel, in Forms tab, "Main" in its "onInit" Event there is only "Init_System()" in the Scrip Tab.

and I don't know what is it.

In the "Interactive Window" tab there's nothing (its empty).

You were talking about "Autoexec" script?? where can i find it !!!

because i'm not seeing anything with that name here.

User Preston2, like you said, If you want, I can send you the application then you can look at that.
Please i just want it to start working as normal.
I'm uploading it in Google Drive, please send me your email.

Please guys I really need help !!!

The Interactive Window will be empty - it is used for direct testing of code.
What you want is to get to the control panel. Can you see anything to get you there?
Otherwise Preston will be able to advise.

Re: My application close itself after I open it

The problem is when I run a Form called 'Main' in Forms tab, it prompts a login/password window,
and when I enter the correct login and password, it closes the app.

That's the problem I'm facing now.

                  (I don't know, I'm just assuming)
I develop in C++, C and VB 6, and other programs I create I use the window register to save info,
so maybe my window register has already got login info, that's why it's behaving like that !!!

while we're waiting for answers, in the meantime, let me test it in a fresh copy of Windows.

Re: My application close itself after I open it

In the forms tab, instead of opening the Main form, select "design"
The form will open in design mode. Right click on any background space and hover "events"
See which are highlighted. Select any highlighted and you will see the code - from your description it is requiring password to open the form and with luck it is not locked down too tight there.
You should be able to read the code to see what it does.

i did it, there are two Events which are highlighted : OnInit and OnTimer.

but unfortunately I don't have anything named "autoexec" in the code tab.

So Why I still get that login/password window when opening the app???

                              I remind that I'm not opening it in the server where it was;
now I'm testing it on my own PC, I copied that on USB key and paste it on my PC.

                              Any idea ???
