Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Another SQL question

    I don't know what it is about Xbasic and SQL or maybe it's the rows. I'm just not getting the hang of it. I have a repeating section with 20 rows once data is filled in there is a save button that will update and write everything to the db dirty or not.

    This is what I have right now
    Code:
    layout_pos = e.datasubmitted.layout_pos
    	format = e.datasubmitted.format
    	default = e.datasubmitted.default
    	start_pos = e.datasubmitted.start_pos
    	end_pos = e.datasubmitted.end_pos
    	naaccr_item = e.datasubmitted.naaccr_item
    	naaccr_name = e.datasubmitted.naaccr_name

    sql_update = "Update dbo.txd_specs_mv set Txd_Specs_ID = Txd_Specs.ID where Layout_Pos = '" + layout_pos + "' and Format = '" + format + "' and Start_Pos = '" + start_pos + "' and End_Pos = '" + end_pos + "' and Default = '" + default + "' and naaccr_item = '" + naaccr_item + "' and naaccr_name = '" + naaccr_name + "'"
    	cn.Execute(sql_update)
    	cn.Close()
    All of the e.datasubmitted commands are working. The save button just doesn't update the DB with the new values. Can anyone help me out here?

    Maybe the where criteria does not match any existing records. I would also add a test for an SQL error and maybe utilize SQL parameters.

      I've changed it a little...
      sql_update = "Update Txd_Specs_Mv set Layout_Pos = '" + layout_pos + "', format = '" + format + "', default = '" + default + "', start_pos = '" + start_pos + "', end_pos = '" + end_pos + "', naaccr_item = '" + naaccr_item + "', naaccr_name = '" + naaccr_name + "' where Txd_Specs_ID = Txd_Specs_ID"
      No matter what I set it two I get 0 in the number fields and blanks in the character fields.

        So what does sql_update look like after the values of the fields/variables are put in?

          Be careful when using e.datesubmitted to populate variables. If any of them are NOT character fields you will need to convert them. So if start_pos is a numeric field:

          start_pos = convert_type(e.datasubmitted.start_pos,"N")

          Also I would consider using arguments to populate the qry string

            This is what it looks like with the debugger..
            Update Txd_Specs_Mv set Layout_Pos = '0', [format] = '', [default] = '', start_pos = '0', end_pos = '0', naaccr_item = '0', naaccr_name = '' where Txd_Specs_ID = Txd_Specs_ID
            Which it then updates the entire table to values listed above...

              Using arguments might be an idea. I've not had much experience with those, but it's all new to me.

                Another update it seems I'm almost there... here is the new sql_update result:
                Update Txd_Specs_Mv set Layout_Pos = '20', [format] = 'B,1,L', [default] = '', start_pos = '174', end_pos = '174', naaccr_item = '362', naaccr_name = 'Census Tract Block Group' where Txd_Specs_ID = '8'
                I need to figure out how to loop it correctly so instead of one result it will have 20 for each value.

                  Re: Another SQL question

                  All of the fields I'm trying to populate are indeed Character fields, except Txd_Specs_ID. Using the e.datasubmitted.(field name) is the only way I get the correct results but when it hits the sql statement everything is 0 or blank which of course wipes the entire table. How do inject the variables into the sql update statement?

                    There are examples using arguments and testing for SQL errors in the alpha wiki and forum.
                    A few examples I just found are
                    http://www.alphasoftware.com/alphafo...t=sql+argument

                    http://wiki.alphasoftware.com/SQL+Co...aDAO+Reference
                    Not sure which version of sql you are using but you should be able to run your update query direct using SQL Management studio or similar to verify it works.

                        Well using the args and insert method I'm able to save changes on my screen but it doesn't want to write to the database.

                          Hi Shinra,

                          Did you get any error message. In another link I showed you how to catch an err and append it into a text file?

                          Regards,
