Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Help with set design from Parent to Grandchild

    PROBLEM:
    I am producing a Survey Report for a class and cannot get the comments included with the correct questions.
    I am guessing that the issue is my set design, since the browse I created based on the set cannot display the comments with the correct questions.
    I am using a standalone desktop Alpha Five V10.

    BACKGROUND:
    The Survey uses questions that are grouped in categories. The user makes comments for each question.
    The Survey Report needs to show tallied results and comments for all surveys submitted for that class.
    Total number of tallied results by Category, then Question (number of Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree, Strongly Disagree) and a calculation of the average for those Statistics.
    Following the Stats, all comments from the users are posted.
    ? Class
    o Category A
     Question Statistics and comments
    o Category B
     Question Statistics and comments
    o Category C
     Question Statistics and comments
    Tables provided are:
    ? Class Table containing the class info and stats and calculated averages.
    ? A Category table containing the category and which questions belong to that category
    o Category A ? Questions 1-3
     Q1
     Q2
     Q3
    o Category B ? Questions 4-8
     Q4 ?
     Q8
    o Category C ? Questions 9-10
     Q9
     Q10
    ? The Comment Table with Courseid, Question_No, Comment
    My current set design shows the Class.dbf as the Parent , Category.dbf as Child and Comment.dbf as Grandchild tables.
    Parent.Courseid
    Child.Category
    Grandchild.Comment
    The Parent?s key field is the Parent.Class->Courseid as is the Comment?s key field (Grandchild.Comment->Courseid).
    My issue is the Child.Category table. I can link the Child.Category->Question_no to the Grandchild.Comment->Question_No, but I have no real link of the Child.Category to the Parent.Courseid.
    ? Parent: Class->Courseid, Class->SurveyType
    ? Child: Category->Survey_Type, Category->Category, Category->Question_No
    ? Grandchild: Comment->Courseid, Comment->Question_No, Comment->Comment
    The grandchild has the Courseid of the Parent and the Question_No of the Child
    After 2 weeks of trials, I can display a report showing everything properly except the comments.
    The comments are not displaying with the appropriate questions. They actually appear all together before the first category.
    As I am the sole programmer on staff, I need a new set of eyes to provide a view I haven?t considered.
    Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

      Since the question is one concerning set design, it seems appropriate to post it here.

      Randall, can you give us a screen shot of the current set? It sounds like you have Categories acting as an intermediary between class and comments - linked like this?:

      Class
      =>Categories
      ==>Comments

      If that is the case you need a different key that is unique between categories and comments.

      Whereas if your links are like this:

      Class
      =>categories
      =>comments

      Then the courseid field will show all comments for classes independent of the category. IOW, a categoryid should link the comments to the category.

      That is if you want class 101 to show categories A,B,C and comments 1,2,3 for category A.

        Hi Robin,

        Although I changed the names (to protect the innocent), the design is as I posted.
        You are correct in your first assumption.

        I am using the Quest_No as the Unique Key. but what I am losing is the integrity of the courseid between the Parent and Grandchild.
        I am attaching two images. (You can ignore the link to Instr. That works and is irrelevant to this discussion)
        I am including the set design image you requested and also a browse of the set that shows:
        Parent Section2->Code
        Child Area->Col_Abbr, Area->Area, Area->Quest_No
        Grandchild Cscc_com->Codef, Cscc_com->QuestionF, Cscc_com->CommentF
        In the browse, you can see that Parent.Code and Grandchild.Codef do not match.
        The link between Parent and Child is Section2->Campus = Area->Col_Abbr.
        There are actually 2 surveys with different questions to each category
        (Category 2 has Questions 6-13 for CSTR, Cat2 has Q 6-14 otherwise)
        Thanks for looking at this.

            I would suggest a opy of the tables, sets and other with some data(not real). One of us should be able to figure it out for you is short order.

              What does the default form view of this set look like for the above section2 record?

                Re: Help with set design from Parent to Grandchild

                RESOLVED!

                Nothing like going back to the basics to figure it out.

                I went back to AlphaSports and evaluated the relationships of the sets Product Sales and Invoice.
                From there I came to realize that the relationships in my set did not work.

                My solution was to modify the grandchild table to include a field that created the relationship.
                For those that delved into my previous design, the change was to create a parent-Child link expression using the Category/Area and Question/Quest_no.
                This still created an issue with the Parent.Courseid did not always match the Grandchild.Courseid, but I was able to filter out the non-matching records and it worked.

                To Jon, I have successfully used the underscore to begin my set names to float them to the top of the Table/Set menu of the control panel.
                I guess A5 considers that to be a valid character value.

                Thanks to all for looking. Your hints and suggestions were all appreciated.

                On to the next challenge!
