Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Setting up Win 10 for AA12 - Advice?

Well I bit the bullet after crashing my XP machine and bought a Dell Inspiron with Win 10 and upgraded to v12. So now what? Any points I should know on how to convert my apps to AA?

My first thought is I need to keep my C:\A5v11 directory named as such else my apps will have problems with scripts and operations. But also what about configuring Win 10?

    Hello Robin,

What Alpha are you upgrading from? From your profile, I'm assuming you're only making a jump from Alpha Five Version 11 to Alpha Anywhere. I suggest starting with the Release Notes for Alpha Anywhere since it's initial release. If there are any major changes between 11 and Alpha Anywhere that are deprecated/obsolete, you're sure to find them listed here: http://news.alphasoftware.com/v12pre...seNotesV12.htm

There were a number of changes in Version 11, too, that deprecated a number of features. Since you're posting here in the desktop forum, some of them may not be relevant. However, be sure to check them as web server functionality that was deprecated in 11 likely no longer works Alpha Anywhere.

You will probably have very few issues.
Your v10.5 up will probably not have any
      I have opened v7, v8, v9 in v12 with little issue
The thing that will cause problems are things like web on the desktop, and some other. Basics should be fine.

There really is nothing to configure with win10 for v12, but install v12 as an administrator. Suggest dev in the program files, but the runtime may go on the c:\folderofchoice\.

Keeping the old app folder is totally up to you. If you have hard coded paths(not a good idea), then it may be easier for you.

Once set up, run some tests.
In the past, when testing, things worked fine. BUT when I opened the source code, it caused problems because alpha seems to "fix" the code for me.

        Hi Sarah,
Thanks for responding. I did review the release notes (quite a list btw), and only found a few that might apply to the desktop for reports and labels. (Whew). Also the list of deprecated items only seems to be for the web and not the desktop. I haven't installed v12 yet, but feel much better about doing so tomorrow.

          Hi Dave,
When you say Alpha 'fixed the code' for you in the code editor, what exactly do you mean? Are you referring to Action Scripting or Xbasic, because I use very little AS.

Also why do you suggest a preference for program files as the default location for the program? I have always avoided that directory because of path syntax.

Oh, and I am moving from v11 to v12 (not v10).

this is nothing to do with other things you are concentrating - good luck with that. but....
            please save yourself future headaches.
make a recovery disk, follow backup and restore from desktop or in the programs ( it may be called maintenance in some computers). they might say best option is usb hard drive but usb flash drive 32gb is all you need. save the usb drive in a disaster proof location. you can also buy personal cloud like wdcloud any tetrabyte capacity you like and back up the whole system periodically. when disaster like last one happens you can restore the windows from recovery disk restore to the last backed up system via your cloud back up.

            good luck with moving.

              Robin,
              V11 to v12?
I would not even worry about it.

It is a 99% no issues on the app running just fine.

Earlier versions like v7, it seems if I open the code on scripts, functions and the like, it would sometimes cause alpha to read it different next time. You should not see these issues.

                Mo,
With clients I always install both dev and runtime outside program files
I doubt you will have any issues at all. I don't use any of the web stuff on my programs - so that may be an issue, as suggested by Dave

First issue: Sales told me I could copy v12 over my v11 install so I did. The controlpanel toolbar in v11 was not working and now neither is it in v12. Any ideas on that? I have opened my own app but did NOT migrate, and also tried Alpha Sports. None of my custom toolbars work either.

Not working = no action when attempting to press a button.

@ GGandhi - I did create an ISO file on my hard drive - which took forever. Now I see that I need to do it again when my system is completely setup. I thought it was just a recovery disk for the operating system not the whole computer!

Re: Setting up Win 10 for AA12 - Advice?

Unless I misunderstood you, v12 needs to be a fresh install, not a copy.

My dev is always installed in program files, and runtime of c:\rootfolder(not in program files). Martin's way works as well.

Installing in the old v11 folder without first removing v11 from the computer could cause issues. Maybe not, but could.

recovery disk is not what iso file is.
recovery disk needs to be done only once ( you can do as many times as you want but it is still the same as dvd they use to send to you. there is also a recovery partition in hard disk when hard disk crashes it may not be accessible, that is why you have it in usb drive.
look into backup and recovery you will understand.

even though I do not have version 12, in the past when I moved from 9 to 10 to 11 all of them were installed on their own directory, never over another file.
I could run both version at the same time moving back and forth, till I no longer needed the old version. in my spare computer I haven't deleted the old programs but it is of no use to me since I forgot anything I did there. just saying

I will uninstall and reinstall and see if that works. I remember that the v11 install had a lot of missing dll files - hopefully a fresh install of v12 has that fixed...and for good measure I will clean the registry before reinstalling.

Do I have to do a migrate for a v11 app?

Would suggest to copy it to a different folder for v12 work. Just save the old v11 for a while. Just a safety thing.

                              exactly as dave said:
all program files will be in a directory like a5v9, a5v10, a5v11 and a5v12 etc., either under program files(86) or root of c drive
all data will be in alphafive v9, alphafive v10, alphafive v11, alphafive v12 etc., in root of c drive.
in each directory there will be folders like claretPOS, jasminePOS, jquery, phonegap etc., these are all copied from old data directory to the new directory to work with new alpha version. you don't have to delete older versions just leave them hanging around.
