    Default Field questions

It has a few years since I have worked in Alpha so I am very rusty and was not great to begin with. I am trying to help a volunteer fire department with a database to keep track of fireman and the fires(and other duties) that they attend and receive a small stipend. I've taken AlphaSports and tried to do some modifications to fit their need. Products are now events and just add the event to the invoice page for each fireman. Need help with two items. One is that I want the invoice number (changed to numerical) to be the same as the fireman number(changed from character to numerical). How can I automatically fill in invoice number with the fireman number when first creating the "invoice"?
Also when looking at the customer (now fireman) form and if you press customer_id for the sorting of the records there is an error message (customer_id is now a numerical field and not character) . I would like to also be able to sort with this browse1 not only by fireman_id but also the date that they became fireman.

    Any advice is appreciated.

Since each fireman should have their ID, the date would have no bearing. One should be able to right click browse heading and sort as needed.

customer_Id is 11 characters long. Best to keep field names under or at 10.

as long as a field only holds numbers it can be easily changed to numeric. There may be field rules changes needed and reset the indexes.

The other part filling when a new record is easy if you set it to autoincrement and/or computed in field rules.

If you want to have your numeric id always sort correctly, you might want to set the first id to 10 instead of 1.

If it is numeric, one does not have to do that.
1 comes before anything. I generally use numeric, 9, 0 and start the sequence at 1001, but one does not have to do that.
When using character fields, it gets more complicated.
