Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    syntax for getting value of a state variable in a viewbox in javascript

    From the releasenotes about viewbox:

    <viewBox>.setState(object) - sets properties in the ViewBox's state object
    Example:
    var vb = {dialog.object}.getControl('MYVIEWBOX1');
    var obj = {name: 'Fred Smith', age: 23};
    vb.setState(obj);
    vb.refresh();

    <viewBox>.getState() - returns an object with the ViewBox's state object
    <viewBox>.clearState() - clears the ViewBox's state object
    How can i get the value of a viewbox state variable?

    tried var v_name = vb.getState('name'); but no luck.....

    Thanks

    You can get at the values in the state object a couple of ways... but, in general, you're always going after the properties of the state object.

    .getState() returns the state object to you. You then ask for the properties of that object.

    Code:
    //here we get a pointer to the viewBox control. Then we access it's state object... and then the state object's properties... age and name.
    var vb = {dialog.object}.getControl('viewBox1');
    var age = vb.state.age;
    var name = vb.state.name;

    //here we use the .getState() method to return the state object of the viewBox
    //then we grab the age and name properties of that state object
    var vb = {dialog.object}.getControl('viewBox1');
    var vbState = vb.getState();
    var sAge = vbState.age;
    var sName = vbState.name;

      Thanks David.

      That works as a charm. But it doesn't solve my real problem, for wich i needed that syntax...Maybe you have another trick for me

      I have a problem how to set the stateobject of the viewbox when initial loading the UX where it is in.

      In my viewbox i build a menulist with a javascript function.
      I want to reference in that function statevariables of the viewbox, the menuchoices depend on conditions which change when user logs in / logs out
      In that case i can change the statevariable and refresh the list.

      But when initial loading the component there is no state object present and i cannot find a places where to do it.
      In the javascript section of the viewbox and in the javascript function to build the menu it is not allowed
      If i do it in another client side event (onrendercomplete or oninitialize complete) the component doesn't load properly.

      I tried solving this riddle with session variables and argument but then the menu list is not refreshed....

        You'll need to provide a sample UX in order to work through this. It doesn't need to, and shouldn't, be security based... but just follow the same logic for changing the viewbox based on some criteria. The criteria can be set manually for testing.

          Hi David,

          Thanks for you offer to look at my sample UX

          For testing i stripped them down, they are in the attachment.
          No security involved, no database needed.

          I have m_master, it sets a menu flag (Y= full menu, N = partial menu)
          At m_master I load component m_child in a dynamic panel, passing the flag through an argument.
          In the child a UX state variable is set (serverside initialize method), and also a child textbox is filled with the argument value.

          The child component has a menupanel (viewbox) with conditional menuoptions
          The menu options are generated with a javascript function.
          Two variant: testing the state variable and the textbox at m_child.

          At initializing both work correct.

          But when I change in m_child the flag the menu list doesn't get refreshed.
          I use for it the on change method of the the menuflag textbox at m_child.
          I build alerts to show that that method fires....

          I need a solution that works and can both prerender m_child and m_master....

          Thanks in advance

            Re: syntax for getting value of a state variable in a viewbox in javascript

            Well that question certainly took a left turn. We went from getting and setting a viewbox state variable to refreshing the datasource of a viewbox control.

            Your question should have been... how do I refresh viewbox data where the source is a javascript function.

            In the case of a viewbox getting it's data from a state variable... because we're literally setting that state variable a .refresh() will work. We are changing the existing data in the viewbox itself.

            In the case where a viewbox is getting it's data from a Javascript function... .refresh() will not work. .refresh() only re-draws the viewbox. Same with the List control. We only refresh what's already there.

            If you do this...
            Code:
            {dialog.object}.refreshViewBoxData('MainMenu');
            Your Javascript function will re-run, because .refreshViewBoxData() (like .refreshListData) re-queries the data source.

            Some other tips:

            Don't use the Javascript Action "In-line javascript" if all you're doing is running javascript. It's a waste of time. If you're running other actions... then maybe ok. Otherwise, just execute the javascript... don't call an action to do it. Click the Text Mode radio button in the event and enter your javascript directly.

            In the onChange event, you're firing off 2 In-line javascript actions. And you have them set to run synchronously. But both are pure javascript... you're not firing off anything inside these actions that leaves the process. So... the synchronous setting doesn't mean much. This code, without the use of actions... is preferred...

            Code:
            var v_flagmenu = {dialog.object}.getValue('Flag_FullMenu_Child');
            {dialog.object}.setStateInfo({'Full_Menu': v_flagmenu});
            window.alert("I got new value: " + v_flagmenu);
            var sInfo = {dialog.object}.stateInfo['Full_Menu'];
            window.alert("StateInfo at onchange Flag_Menu_child is:" + sInfo);

            {dialog.object}.refreshViewBoxData('MainMenu');
            alert("refresh menu executed in onchange of Flag_FullMenu_child");
