Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Desktop & tablet

    Hello

Am I correct in assuming that if I take a Windows 10 tablet and have a wireless connection to my server based desktop application, that it would function
    just as another workstation?

    Many Thanks

      Thanks Cornelius.
In which case in the event of the wireless being unavailable, I could just plug the laptop into my switch via a standard CAT5E cable.

      Much appreciated.

Alex that will only work if it is a Windows Tablet. We use Surface Tablets in our warehouse but connect to our server via a Remote Desktop connection. Has the added advantage of making app perform quicker and less likelihood of data loss if the connection is dropped. We have the tablets fitted on our fork trucks so the drivers can book stock in and out as they and as they are basically sitting on a huge battery so battery life is no problem.
Another advantage of this method is that given a suitable app you can run your Alpha App on an IPad.
We designed a special keyboard within our Alpha app to save keep having to pop up and drop down the native touch keyboard.

Bob was kind enough to show me their tablet interface and I thought it was a terrific. Great design, easy to use. It shows that the desktop CAN be extended successfully into a mobile environment.

Music to my ears. Over my 23 years association with Alpha I have repeatedly commented on their great strength of giving the developer multiple ways of achieving a singular purpose.

              Kind Regards

                Bob,

I'm curious how you do the remote desktop connections to a single server. I thought the first remote connection would prevent others from connecting ?

                Thanks.

The shadowed users would not be affected. If there was only ever one user using the remote desktop, it would work; otherwise they would have to use Terminal Services.

                    Re: Desktop & tablet

I think you can only do one rdp connection to a standard Windows machine. However we are running a Windows server with a number of rdp licences. At only one time we have up to six users connected to it running a number of applications.

Only a guess here and not tested.

a shadow can open multiple copies, but not sure several can use the desktop at once to start it.

Bob, you are running what I call Terminal Services - you buy licenses in groups of five - used to be 80, but I think has gone up to about 120, now.

I wasn't going to bring this up but .... I have a client that replaced their "standard" terminal services setup with virtual machines. They re-purposed a server to run Server 2012 R2 as the host server and, on the same machine, carved out 8 virtual workstations where the Alpha runtime is installed. They have 6 physical desktops, each of which RDP's in to a corresponding virtual workstation where we run a shadowed version of the application. With only one RDP session per virtual workstation, there are no CALs and seats charges. It sounds complicated but, once it's set up, I think it's easier to manage an app than with the traditional TS configuration.
