Because of some recent problems with my server crashing due to the number of rows in some of the repeating sections in a couple of my apps I've decided to try using a list control as a substitute. My theory is that since I'm only using the buttons, "fill in fields" and other actions once, inside the detail view for the list instead of the repeating section duplicating them multiple times, I should take quite a load off of the application server.
The good news is that it seems to work much faster and so far, it isn't crashing my server, even with lists that would have had over 150 rows as a repeating section.
The bad news is that lists were made to work for mobile apps and lack some of the functionality of controls that are "allowed" in a repeating section. Because of this, I find that I'm writing almost everything as custom code. I've been able to do it so far, and work around issues that have come up but now I'm thinking about tackling a substitute for the "file upload" action JavaScript that I currently use in my repeating sections in at least two apps. I have to do file upload as usually it's a pdf and not an image file. Has anyone done this with a list control?
I was happy with the repeating sections but my server wasn't. I now find myself wishing that the list control would be further optimized for non-mobile apps as well as the mobile apps. I've already been using them for a long time as navigators for my apps but now I'm using them for data entry as well. Is anyone else out there using list controls in their non-mobile apps?
