Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Wiki Update?

Have you seen this page: http://www.alphasoftware.com/documen...ions/index.xml

    or this page: http://www.alphasoftware.com/documen...Type/index.xml

If it's not what you are looking for, let me know what you'd like. We have a documentation staff that can find or recreate it for you. You just need to ask. (That's what the link at the bottom of each page is for).

      Re: Wiki Update?

I'm simply looking for a table of contents.

If I know what I'm searching for chances are I'll find it but if I don't know what I'm searching for I'm lost. I want/need to be able to "explore" the documentation

The information is at hand I'd say if you look at the breadcrumbs. A clickable Tree / Table of contents; that would greatly improve the usability of this new documentation.

So all the USEFUL desktop functions have been hidden under server API - no wonder I couldn't find anything.

A table of contents (basically the xml structure of the whole thing) would be the solution so you can truly explore the docs; right now you have to dig for the gold but if you don't know where to dig then chances are you may not hit the gold...

            Re: Wiki Update?

Besides the ability to add doc notes to the legacy documentation, there is also the ability to add a difficult to find entry to the favorites tab.

Maybe they could add a copy button on the new wiki and then we could create our own tables with links to the help... essentially recreate our own "legacy" app since eventually the links in the current one will fail.

Hopefully they have more to add to whatever it is they have now, because it does not work for me at all.

                Dave,

You have not been digging deep enough; it seems to be rather complete but you probably get this feeling because there is no table of contents.

                  Re: Wiki Update?

I see now that there is a button to copy a shareable link, right next to the printer button. Now with the legacy doc, I can use the doc notes to fix the broken links - cool, AND keep my favorites list.

                    Re: Wiki Update?

I find the documentation built into V11 is way better then the old Wiki and way,way better then this new documentation site.
But I do not have or use V12 (Alpha Anywhere but on my dev machine) so I could care less.

                      Re: Wiki Update?

Well while the new Wiki IS improving, I am finding that the legacy documentation is breaking more and more. Images are disappearing and many links are broken. My guess is 'they' don't want us to use it!

                      @GG
it would have been nice if they have the old one and and a link to new documentation. if the new documentation is so good no one will ever go to the old one and it will die down.

Yes you are correct. The internal documentation relies on images from the Wiki site. By shutting down the Wiki site, Alpha has basically disabled the full functionality of the built in documentation for pre-v12 users.

They need to restore the old Wiki site so that earlier versions of A5 can still use the documentation or at least put all the images back on the old wiki site.

They probably will not and is another reason I am leaving Alpha.

They could just offer a free update to the earlier version that would point to the new image locations. But wait, I forgot, Alpha does not offer support for what they break.

If this really is their policy, it's incredibly self-destructive.

Just some FYI... I have been trying to live with the new help system but today I just gave up. After searching for 10 minutes for a particular function and not finding it I reset to legacy and found it in under 30 seconds.

A simple fix would be a straight topic list so you can just scroll down till your brain bumps into something it remembers.
