Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    PhoneGap Document Handler - Accessing, Downloading and Viewing FIles

    Hi All,
    I have a requirement to access stored files (mainly PDF) on my server. I have successfully built a test App that can access a PDF file on a pubic server and load it on an iPad using the PhoneGap Document Handler .

    I'm just not sure how I can access files on a secured server without opening up access to the public.

    Ideally what I want in the App is have a list of available files that the user has rights to view and then have a download to device button, once downloaded they then can select to view the document.

    Every time the App syncs to the server it checks the document date/time and compares with the document date/time that has been downloaded; if they differ then the App has a warning that the document is old and needs to be downloaded again.

    Any assistance to point me in the right direction would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

    I've not tried this. Using Security, you could set your PDF files to "File Requires Login". After the user logs in, they should be able to access them... and no one else can.

      Re: PhoneGap Document Handler - Accessing, Downloading and Viewing FIles

      Thank you for your reply, where do I set the file requires logon?

      I'm currently running the following via a button on a panel card:
      var _url ='http://downloads.alphasoftware.com/Cordova/documentation/alphaphonegapdoc.pdf';
      var _msg = 'Loading';
      showDocument(_url,_msg);

      This is the Javascript:
      function showDocument(_url,_msg) {
      // show wait spinner/message
      var wObj = {};
      wObj.message = arguments[1] || "Loading document, please wait...";

      {dialog.object}.showWaitMessage('page',wObj);

      // call PhoneGap DocumentHandler plugin
      try {
      handleDocumentWithURL(function() {
      {dialog.object}.hideWaitMessage();
      var msg = 'Document loaded.';
      showInfoMessage(msg);
      }, function() {
      var msg = 'Document load failed.';
      {dialog.object}.hideWaitMessage();
      showInfoMessage(msg);
      },_url);
      } catch(e) {
      {dialog.object}.hideWaitMessage();
      alert(e.message);
      }

      }

        Because you mentioned users and rights I assumed you've got Alpha Security turned on. Do you? If not, and you don't plan on using Alpha Security, then you won't be able to set security on a file. If you are, or are planning on using Alpha Security, then, within Alpha, you can right-click on a component, file, folder, etc. and select the Security option from the right-click menu. And you can set security via the Web Security option in the Web Control Panel.

          Hi David,

          I haven't yet implemented security for an iOS App; though I have for a Web App. I'll turn on security and see how I go....

          Thanks for pointing me in the right direction

          Cheers
          Craig
