Show count of child records in List2 on List1's List Layout for each record

Does anyone have any ideas for showing the number of child records in List2 on List1's List Layout for each record?
For each row in my List Layout for List1, I would like to conditionally show either a "Create" new or "Edit" child records button based on whether there exists child records in List2.... And all this in disconnected mode with pre-loaded data for the lists.
Maybe through somehow parsing the json data that has all that information saved to it already?

I have a button named btnCreateEdit defined in the Parent list. Try this in the Parent List, onItemDraw event...

Because your Child List data is pre-loaded, it is available in the Parent List as a property of "data" which is passed into the event.

You have to be careful, because if there is no child data for a row, then the property does not exist.

So... here we test for the property first... data.__LIST__LISTCHILD. This is an array of child rows. If this property exists then we can get it's count and set the text of our button.

If the property is not found, then we know there are no child rows, and we set the text of our button accordingly.

This answers your question... but... it'll be interesting to see how the next part unfolds. You add a child row. What then?

Thanks for the help, David.
This works nicely for the first drawing of the parent list items. I get my 'Edit + correct child count' text on the button for each element that has child data and the 'Create' text on the button when it doesn't; however, I attempted to use for a 2nd time the same if/else test combined with an 'onClick' on a List Layout Template Item that I created around that button. I must not be understanding something because it always seems to be true (the property seems to be found) even if there is no child data.
As a test, I removed the test for the property on the onClick of the button and changed it to just explicitly trigger a refresh of the list. For any button on a row that I click on on the parent list (and only for that row), the button converts to "Edit 0" when the list is redrawn instead of still being "Create". As if data.__LIST__LISTCHILD exists but then the length is clearly 0.
Any ideas?

Jeff, you'd need to show your List Layout Template Item.

Do you mean that you're now testing for Child Count in the onClick event of a button? If so, can you show the code? And... can you explain why you need to test for children again in the onClick event?

I was testing for the Child count again because on the onClick event of the Edit/Create button, if there were children, I wanted to simply direct the user to the child list panel and let the user edit the children. However, if there were no children, I would call a "createChildren" function that I created in order to add some children records using the addTableRow method.
Anyway, I cleaned out the template items in order to remove any 'noise' and simply did an onClick for the parent list (the "classic way" without using template items) to do nothing more than:

var listObj = {dialog.object}.getControl('LIST_PARENT');
listObj.refresh();

This list still refreshes with only the button on the row I clicked on being converted from "Create" to "Edit 0".

Update:
Seems to work a little better when using:

{dialog.object}._listRefreshRow('LIST_PARENT');

Instead of refreshing the whole list.

Now I'm back to trying to get it to call my "createChildren" function only if the button text says "Create" (ie. if no children exist)

I may try creating 2 separate buttons and playing with Show/hide expressions.

This works in the OnClick event of the List, Fields, Button Field Properties.
