Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Extend session lifetime

    Hi,

I am using Alpha 5 v12 developer version. My development server looks like this:
    development_server.png
I have increased session lifetime to 30 mins. Its working when publishing locally but can't increase session life time when publishing in remote Alpha Application server for IIS.

Do I need different setting for session in remote server ? Plz I am waiting for your reply.
    Thanks

    yes.
wherever you are hosting your application server if you look at the task bar on the right side alpha server icon is present. click on it and configure that one to reflect the changes, that will increase the lifetime of session where it really matters.

        my developer version
not in your development machine, but
wherever you are hosting your application server
        the remote site.
the development machine will not have one, but the alpha web server program does. so look in the REMOTE site

              Re: Extend session lifetime.

This is theoretical as I have not used Alpha on top of IIS much yet, but I would assume when Alpha piggybacks off IIS they are letting IIS handle session management.
If you dont find a config options in your IIS console for Alpha App Server - try actually tweaking the IIS settings.
Dont forget to restart the IIS website

                Hi GGandhi and Scott,

Thanks for your reply. Now I am able to extend session life time.

It's under the web.config file. I have changed timeout to 30 and session life time is extended to 30 minutes.

                <sessionState mode="StateServer" cookieName="x...x" timeout="30" allowCustomSqlDatabase="false"></sessionState>

                Thanks again for your support.

During Development time (Local Webroot).. where is the Extend Session time setup ?
I understand, after publish to IIS.. you can edit the Web.Config file for the parameter.

                      Rajen,
Is it expected your users will leave your app open all the time, so it is always ready to be used?

I'm just curious, because that is how my users use the web app that I built. I have had problems with the load balancer; it had its own timeout setting. Even after correcting its timeout value and inserting code into my app to send short requests to the server every 90 seconds, or so, I still had problems with people supposedly "timing out". I don't think they actually got a session expired message. I think the Grid they use would not get a response from the server when they did a "submit". I swapped out the Grid for a UX and also reconfigured load balancer to always direct traffic to instance # 1 of WAS. I have not had any "time out" complaints after doing that.

                        Re: Extend session lifetime

For anyone looking - you CAN manually adjust the web config however this gets overridden when you publish again using the IIS Publishing Profile.

Recommended way to change session timeout is under the 'PROJECT SETTINGS' icon in Alpha Anywhere software for the project.
