Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to create custom report based on selected columns ?

    Hi all,

Can anyone show me the concept to produce a custom report based on selected columns?

What I can imagine is we still need to create report layout from "tableXXX/viewXXX" then put all columns in report layout.

We have an UX screen, we can use list to pick some columns and click submit. Then after click submit, we do something to manipulate the report layout based on selected columns.

But I have no idea to manipulate the report layout, because when we defining report, we need to define SQL query and I think we can't overwrite it when call the report from submit button.

Maybe you have another technique to do this?

Generally, I need an UX screen that user can choose which columns they want to print, and call a report layout that we have defined before.

    Thanks for advance.

How many columns would you be allowing the user to select from?

Hi Keith, if my full report columns are 10, then user can choose maybe 7 columns. Let's say we have 3 columns that always printed on the report.

ex: staffID, staff_firstname, Staff_lastname, division, position, join_since, location, phone_number, address, marital_status, etc, etc

StaffID, firstname, lastname always be printed and user can manually choose next columns, which one they need to show in the report. make sense?

I have read some thread that give an example using conditional object, but I still confused. Can you give me a sample component?

I need this on layout-table report and freeform report..

        Hi Ferry,

"using conditional object" is one way to go. What you may have to consider when using that method is how the report will look if a column is not selected. Keep in mind also that you are not selecting columns but fields to display or not. Lets think that you have three columns of data, the user is given the choice not to print column two, yes you can hide this conditionally, but it would leave a big vertical gap in the report. The other thing to consider, what would get displayed if two of the fields you want displayed are in the same conditional object.

I would be interested in your thoughts.

This is not a simple task.

I would use the printhtml() concept.

          - Build a function that reads the list of fields
          - builds the html to display those fields
          - your report then has a defined option that is printhtml(<generated html>)

            Hi Keith,

I see, the custom columns only hidden on the report but the blank space still at there. I tought the blank column space will automatically taken by next object (just like grid columns when we use show/hide expression).

Maybe we can display something like "*******" or "#########" or "-" when the column is not selected.

Thanks Alan! I will try the printhtml() concept.
