Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Character field and the & symbol

    I have a UX component with Client-Side Calculated Field. The result is displayed in a TextArea.

    Code:
    wo_no +'          Item:  ' + alltrim(item_no) + crlf() + Billingname + crlf() + n_number + crlf() + alltrim(make) + ' ' + alltrim(model) + crlf() + 'Write Up:  ' + Writeup
    The field 'Billingname' contains customer names. I have a customer whose name contains an & symbol.

    The customers name is G&E Manufacturing. When I run the UX, G&E Manufacturing is displayed.
    Is it possible to wrap the field 'Billingname' in a function to eliminate this. I can't find one.

    Thanks.

    Re: Character field and the & symbol

    may be there is another easy way to do but...
    wo_no +' Item: ' + alltrim(item_no) + crlf() + word(Billingname, "&",1)+"&"+word(Billingname,"&",2) + crlf() + n_number + crlf() + alltrim(make) + ' ' + alltrim(model) + crlf() + 'Write Up: ' + Writeup
    may work.
    if it does then you can write udf to format only those fields with "&" in their name an call that function.
    i did not test this yet.

      Re: Character field and the & symbol

      While I think that will work, this will only satisfy the case were there is just one & in a customer's name. I don't know if it would happen, but what if there were two & in a name. Then this would fail. My other concern is what other symbols that could be in a name would javascript not like.

      Where would I save/store my own UDF function. In the Desktop side, functions are store in the code tab. Does that apply to the WEB side? Never mind, I see the Xbsic Function Library.

        try this instead
        *html_unescape(BillingName)
        and check the documentation for *html_unescape to see all options.
        that may be better since name may not be predictable as you said.

          I tried to use that function and Alpha wouldn't let me save the calculation. There is a drop down list of functions, but it's very limited. There must be away around this but I haven't found it yet.

            Re: Character field and the & symbol

            i just ran a test with a simple dialog no data from elsewhere just five fields all characters and result displayed in the text area (tested normal and as well as checking the html editor check box) in both cases i DID NOT get the result you are talking about. it comes clean as g&e manufacturing.
            so there is something different in your set up, would you post how you have designed your ux/dialog?

            edit:
            even when i used edit-combo lookup it DID NOT do what you are saying.

              That may be because my code is the formula to define a calculated field in the UX component.

              Cal.JPG

              How did you use your code?

                I used the same calculated field builder and picked one field at a time and inserted the + sign before adding the next field.
                same as yours. except I did not have a crlf()
                I can do that later on.

                    Re: Character field and the & symbol

                    Strange.

                    I'm populating a number of hidden textboxes from a list. My calculation is using the values from these hidden textboxes. In the following picture, you will see that the testbox, which is normally hidden, is populated correctly. But when using the value in the textbox in the calculated field expression, something happens after the & symbol.

                        Check the Type of Billingname and make certain it's a Textbox - I can't recreate your issue watch this video.
                        You could also look at
                        wo_no +' Item: ' + alltrim(item_no) + crlf() + {*HTML_TO_TEXT(Billingname)} + crlf() + n_number + crlf() + alltrim(make) + ' ' + alltrim(model) + crlf() + 'Write Up: ' + Writeup

                          Thank you Peter. When I went back and looked at it, Billingname was defined as a label and NOT a textbox. Amazing how one can look at something and not see it. And thank you Gandhi. I will be more careful next time.
