Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    500 Error when uploading large files

    Alpha Five/11.0 Build/3381-4096

    I have a file upload handler with the following simple test case code that is failing to save an uploaded file when the uploaded file is large.
    It seems the upload works but then file.from_blob is failing. If anyone has run into this issue before I would love to here how you resolved it.

    Some Info:
    My web application Maximum POST body size (MB) is set to 1024 which should be more than enough.

    file_upload.a5w
    Code:
    <form id="fileUploader" method="post" enctype="multipart/form-data" action="handlers/file_upload_handler.a5w">
    	<input name="file" type="file" multiple="">
    	<input type="submit" value="Submit"/>
    </form>
    file_upload_handler.a5w
    Code:
    <%a5
    	dim fileData as P=Request.Variables.file
    	dim file_ext as C=lastword(fileData.fileName,".")

    	dim upload_dir as C="c:/temp/"
    	dim fullfilename as C=api_uuidcreate()+"."+file_ext
    	dim absolute_file_path as C=upload_dir+fullfilename

    	file.from_blob(absolute_file_path,fileData.data)

    	if file.exists(absolute_file_path) then
    		?"Uploaded"
    	else
    		?"Failed to upload"
    	end if
    %>
    I am receiving a 500 Internal Server Error with an 'out of memory' error.
    I have also tried using file.append() and receive the same error
    Code:
    500 Internal Server Error
    Script Error
    Error:Script:" handlers/file_upload_handler.a5w" line:9
    file.from_blob(absolute_file_path,fileData.data)
    Out of memory
    fileData.data subelement not found.

    Re: 500 Error when uploading large files

    You should be using Request.Variables.file.SaveToFile() instead of file.from_blob. This avoids the need to load the file contents in to memory.

      Hi Lenny,
      Thank you so much for your response.

      I tried to look for this function in the documentation but was unable to find it. Could you possibly provide a reference?
      Is the method signature just Request.Variables.file.SaveToFile() or am I passing a path Request.Variables.file.SaveToFile(absolute_path)?

      Thanks in advance.

        Re: 500 Error when uploading large files

        Hi again Lenny,
        I looked through the documentation and the section on 'Uploading Files to the Web Application Server' uses file.from_blob - which is why I was using it.
        I have replaced it with: Request.Variables.file.SaveToFile(fullpath) and this seems to work.

        However, I am getting the following:
        413 Request Entity Too Large
        The data sent in the body of this request is too large. You must upload less data in a request.

        Alpha Five/11.0 Build/3381-4096

        My server's Maximum POST body size (MB) is set to 1800. Is there another setting I need to modify?

        Please let me know.

          Re: 500 Error when uploading large files

          The documentation is at http://www.alphasoftware.com/documen...e%20Method.xml, but it is still not complete.

          The first parameter is the destination file path.

          The optional second parameter is to append to an existing file. The default behavior is to overwrite an existing file.

          Here is a very basic example

          Code:
          <html>
          <head><title>File Upload</title></head>
          <body>
          <%a5
          if eval_valid("Request.Variables.File1")
          	dim UniqueId			as c = time("0h0m0s3")

          	dim FNUploadedFile		as c = "c:\windows\temp\\" + UniqueId + "_" + Request.Variables.File1.FileName
          	Request.Variables.File1.SaveToFile(FNUploadedFile)
          	Response.Write("Saved uploaded file as <b>" + FnUploadedFile + "</b><br/>")

          else
          	Response.Write("Form has not been submitted.<br/>")
          end if
          %>
          <hr/>
          <form action="<%a5?Request.ScriptName%>" method="post" enctype="multipart/form-data">
          <input type="file" name="File1"/><br/>
          <input type="submit" name="cmd" value="Upload File"/>
          </form>

          </body></html>

            Re: 500 Error when uploading large files

            Hi Lenny,
            Thank you very much for your assistance and the sample.

            The 413 error mysteriously disappeared this morning - so I am good to go now.
            The Request.Variables.file.SaveToFile(absolute_path) does solve the out of memory issue I was experiencing.

            All of your V11/V12 Open Documentation... help files reference using file.from_blob when uploading in order to save the file to disk.
            Hopefully this post will save some future users some frustration.

            Thank you so much for your assistance!
