Hiding list control columns

I'm trying to hide columns on a list control on a UX. I've been able to hide the fields successfully, but the columns are still accounted for in the list control, so I end up with white space between some columns.

I checked the option in the list layout to hide column if field is hidden, and have the show/hide expression for the field set to call a javascript function.

The only thing I could think of is the layout property mentions that if a server side show/hide is used, but the fields tab in the list control doesn't mention if the show/hide is server or client side. I'm thinking server since you have to state Javascript: at the beginning of any javascript code for the show/hide.

I've only been able to find one source explaining the show/hide expression in an AlphaSoftware video, nothing on hiding the column or what is actually hidden.

Any insight into this is appreciated!

Can you explain what your use cases are, please?

There are plenty of ways of doing this.
This code looks to see if the column star has a value if it does not it uses different html.

You can also toggle templates based on some criteria.

Just set the column width to 0px in the layout properties.

Just curious... why try and hide the columns? Are you showing/hiding based on other column data or criteria? Or you just don't want a column to display?

Thanks for the reply Michael, I saw a post by Davidk going into the freeform/multiple layout feature. It would most likely work, but it seems a bit time intensive for something that would appear to be apart of the list control properties via checkboxes.

@iRadiate, I think I'll look into this option, if I can do it dynamically.

To answer your question David, I am trying to hide columns based on information in this list controls parent. In the parent list, the user can enter up to eight characteristics, in the child list control there are eight matching checkboxes. This has been a complicated task for me because I am converting a form that is filled in by hand to data. On the form there are eight fields to put part characteristics to check for, then underneath there are checkboxes to match them; as parts come in, inspectors put down a lot number, then check off each characteristic as they inspect the items. They don't always use all eight of the characteristics spots for each part. On my child list control, I don't want to show the unused checkboxes as they are not relevant. If I find time I'll try to upload a copy of the document in question. I have been able to hide the controls, but end up with white space where they should show up.

Above the yellow line is the parent record, below the yellow line are all the child records. The slanted column headings are what I'm working on. The headings in the slanted columns apply to all the child records.

I am not still sure what you are trying to do.

Are you collecting data or just displaying it?
