Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    scheduled task for db with security

    I need a scheduled task to run a script. Most of my production databases do this to update indexes nightly, etc. I do this from a database that has no security, so the task needs no user intervention to enter credentials. The script just uses the right path to get to tables and does its work.

    The code I currently want to schedule executes about 30 different operations. My problem is that I don't see a way to run an operation from db2 if the operation actually resides in db1. I can't attach the production tables to db2 (no security) since db1 has security. With forms you can do myformname@c:\mydb\mytable.dbf, but I don't see anything similar for operations.

    Of course I could convert all 30 operations to xbasic and then I can insert paths where needed. This is a bad option. The operations will generate tons of code and maintenance will be a nightmare.

    Is there any way to automatically supply the username/password when Alpha is run from a batch file? When I ran a bat file on the secured database, after entering credentials, I got errors about operations not being found. I have not even looked into that since the whole concept is probably a dead end.

    Bill

    I copied an operation in Alpha Sports to another table in Alpha Sports and action scripting generated this code.
    So I had 2 operations with the same name but based on different tables.

    I'd guess you could use the same logic for a table/set not in the database and not tied to Alpha database/workspace security.

    Code:
    'Run a saved 'Export' operation: 'Export Customers to File'.
    query.filter = ""
    query.order = ""

    DIM operation_name as c
    operation_name = "Export Customers to File@c:\users\owner\documents\alpha five v10\alphasports2\help.ddd"
    If operation_name <> "" then
    	export.run(operation_name,query.filter,query.order)
    End if

      That may be the Bingo! moment. When I tried that I used .dbf vs. .ddd. Been too long since I did it... I'll rebuild my test and report back.

      Thanks.

        Al,

        It works for me also in alphasports, but there are issues.

        It does not work when run from a different database, using the path to point to alphasports. The error is
        "Object does not support requested interface."

        Commands like these in the xbasic for the operation will be a problem when run from a different database, because they will be resolved in the context of the "from" database.
        Code:
        export_filename = a5.get_path() +chr(92)+ "customer.asc"
        and
        a_tbl = table.open("customer")
        When converted to xbacic these issues can be fixed, but that is what I am hoping to avoid.

        Bill.
