Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    IIS handler not working

Not really sure this is where this belongs but I'll try.

I am attempting to migrate to the Alpha Anywhere for IIS server, however I have run in to some problems. The install all seemed to work, but there appear to be some missing handler config to trigger the A5 process when an .a5w page is loaded. When I try to visit the page I get the following:

HTTP Error 404.3 - Not Found
The page you are requesting cannot be served because of the extension configuration.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers,

Well, I'm no IIS expert but take a quick look at the IIS Server Role components you have installed. Here is what mine looks like and it is working.

I'm on 2008R2, so it's not quite the same, but I have all the same components installed. Thanks for the input though!

Do you have a Handler Mapping for *.a5w? if so, could you edit it and post a screenshot of the window? I think that's where things are going wrong...

I'm not the author of the site - just the server admin. My efforts so far have been to allow IIS to serve an existing app that was published for the standalone server I have a feeling that the publisher is doing something to configure the server - so I will getting the author to republish using the Alpha tools.

If you want Alpha to run on IIS you need to install Alpha for IIS Add-in

                  Re: IIS handler not working

This is not a training course issue.. there is just NO detailed technical documentation for Alpah5 on IIS so when a specific technical question comes up, there is no source for answers.

IIS is installed and working correctly, we serve .NET and PHP sites on it now. I have installed the A5 Anywhere for IIS module and there were no errors. The licence key is installed and activated. The 2 pages of very general instructions have been followed right up to the point of publishing.

What I need to know is do you have to publish your app through the Developer or can I just upload through FTP? That's the only thing I have not done because I am not the developer, just the server admin. I have created a new website through IIS and pointed it at the folder with the existing app (that up until now has run off the dedicated v12 server). When I attempt to access the page it I am getting this 404 error because the handler that triggers the Alpha5 interpreter on a .a5w file is not configured.

I have asked about the handler, but no one has replied with the details on how it is to be configured. I can only assume that some part of the publishing process configures the handler because otherwise it would not be possible for IIS to serve parsed Alpha 5 pages. Can anyone confirm this? Could someone with working IIS install see if there is a handler for *.a5w set in their Hander Mappings under the IIS Manager?

I don't mean to be rude, but I am looking for an answer on a specific question. While I appreciate people from the community replying, I don't need to start at step one here - I need an experienced server admin to tell me what type of Handler to create, or a Alpha employee to tell me that I must publish through the developer tools to make this work.

                  Thanks.

The tricky thing here is that Alpha for IIS has only just come out of Beta so there is not a huge knowledge base on IIS yet.
We have a couple of IIS based Alpha Apps the inital configuration can be tricky. but I have followed the documentation step by step and got there in the end.

Nope! I dont see any, so it must be dealt with a different way. Here is what I see on one of my servers http://screencast.com/t/Co7uq93Q

This may be part of the frustration here...
You are a Sever admin coming at this with good IIS knowledge but know nothing about Alpha Anywhere, Conversly and we are Alpha developers will very little knowledge of IIS. So there is a certan amount of lost in translation happening here. We are trying to help you.

I am not an expert but I am pretty sure you need to publish from the Alpha Dev Tool.
As I said in a previous post, follow the documentation and get the IISHello page running... published from the Alpha Developer.

You need to publish through Alpha Anywhere. What gets published will include a complete web.config containing the necessary handler definition.

Thank-you to both of you! The developer is back from holidays on Monday, so I will ask him to publish from his developer tools.
