Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    looping through grid

    Hello,

    I've got a grid that has got a few pages of records. How can I loop through the grid and look for a vale in a field?

    Thanks,

      If you are looking for information from your data, it would likely be easier to just connect to the database directly and search there.

      However, why not just setup a standard search field? That will not only find the value in the field, it will also setup the grid so only those values are displayed.

        I'd like to write some Javascript that gets latitude and longitude values and plots them on a map. Will use the search to filter teh data and then go through all pages and get latitude and longitude and plot them on the map.

        Thnx

          Re: looping through grid

          If you are wanting to do this client-side, you can only 'see' the data from the rows of the current page. You have to go to the server to see the other rows of data from the other 'pages'. If you really just want to loop through the data of the current page on the client-side then use the following grid method inside a 'for' loop:

          {grid.Object}.getValue(GridPart,GridFieldName,[row - omit for Search and Detail View part])

          You can get the number of rows to loop through by using:

          {grid.Object}.getRowsInGrid()

          However, if you have an updateable grid and you allow inserting of rows then you might have to search through the negative row numbers that are used for the new records. I don't recall the specifics on dealing with the 'new' row values, but I think you'll find info about that in the on-screen help for getRowsInGrid().

            I still think you are better off getting your search criteria and search the database directly.

            If you need it in Javascript, then run an xbasic function to get the data, then pass that data to your javascript function like this:

            function getdata as c (e as p)

            connect to database ;

            mydata = data from the database in json format

            getdata = "javascriptfunctiontorun(mydata)"

            Obviously, there is much more to the code than that, but that gives you the gist of what you would need.

              Re: looping through grid

              I use the technique from my post # 5, to walk through an updateable Grid and put red borders around any field values that are in error. Sometimes, it may not be known if a field value is in error until it is compared against all other rows in the Grid. The OP does not state what is to be done with the value he's looking for.

                I found this thread and was hoping to find an example of JavaScript that can loop through all cells in a grid. I expect that this is not an unusual request but I haven't found grid methods to work with the columns.
                This type of loop would be useful in an updatable grid to perform data validation before saving.

                PHP Code:
                var rowNum
                var colNum
                var colName
                var fieldValue

                for (rowNum 1rowNum <= {grid.Object}.getRowsInGrid(), rowNum++) {
                    for (
                colNum 1colNum <= {grid.Object}.getColumnsInGrid(), colNum++) {  // <--- Need help here

                colName = {grid.Object}.getColumnName(colNum);                        // <--- Need help here

                fieldValue = {grid.Object}.getValue('G',colName,rowNum);

                console.log('Row: ' rowNum ', Column: ' colNum ' (' colName ') = ' fieldValue);
                    }

                  Re: looping through grid

                  Grids have built in methods for doing data validation already. If you have really complex validation, you can write script into the appropriate event (canupdate I think) to validate there, so there would be no reason to build your own column by column, row by row script to do this.

                    Re: looping through grid

                    I need to validate a variable number of columns and can't hard code the column names. It's a bit hard to explain. Maybe the built-in Alpha validation would handle it but I don't know enough about it.

                    I created a routine that will loop through each cell by row and column and explained my column situation in this thread:

                      Code:
                      debugger;
                      var gr = {Grid.Object};
                      var msg = '';
                      var val = '';
                      var cName = '';
                      var row = 3; // Replace this with your row loop
                      for(var k=0; k < gr.gridColumnInfo.length; k++ ) {
                      	cName = gr.gridColumnInfo[k].name;
                      	val = gr.getValue('G',cName,row);
                      	msg = msg + cName + '=' + val + ';  ';
                      }
                      alert(msg);

                        Where did you discover gridColumnInfo? I don't see that in the documentation, in the forum, or in in Google.

                          Ben,
                          To find the variable, 'gridColumnInfo', I put the first two lines of code (from post # 11) into the Javascript for a temporary toolbar button and ran it under Chrome with debugging tools turned on. After the 'var gr = …" , I inspected the contents of the contents of the local 'gr' variable in dev tools until I found what I was looking for. I knew the variable existed because I had seen it before in stepping through some of the AA JS code, perhaps it was the {grid.object}.getValue() code that I first saw use of that variable.

                            Rich,

                            Thanks for revealing the undocumented gridColumnInfo for use in JavaScript. This saved me the hassle of dealing with an XBasic routine to build a string of the column headings and putting them into a session variable so they would be visible to JavaScript. For anyone else looking for undocumented grid objects, here are two more: detailViewColumnInfo and searchColumnInfo . They are for internal use and may change at any time. YMMV.

                            Below is the JavaScript nested loop I'm using to evaluate every row and column in my grid to set 'Forecast' 0 values to null inside the canGridSubmit() Client-side event

                            PHP Code:
                            /*
                             This code will loop through all grid cells and change
                             all Forecast values of 0 to null.
                             This is called by the canGridSubmit() Client-side event.
                            */

                            var gr = {Grid.Object};

                                var
                            rowNum;
                                var
                            colNum;
                                var
                            colName;
                                var
                            fieldValue;
