Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Alpha Nested Tabs with Embedded Grids (UX) - Slow Load

    Hello everyone,
We have a profile page (employee.a5w?eid=12345) that has a UX that represents an Employee Record- on this UX there are multiple tab controls (and nested tabs).

OnDialogInitialize we use the ActionScripting to Load Data from the employee table for the employee id provided in the URL above.
There is a General tab and a Performance Tab. Within the Performance Tab - there are additional tabs: Attendance, Coaching, Training etc.
On the Attendance Tab - I have 3 embedded grids and these grids are set to employeeid(N)={EMPLOYEE_ID}.

    The issue:
If I do not check Live Link on these grids - I do not see ajax callbacks to load the grid data and navigating to the Attendance Tab does not produce an AJAX callback to load the grid data. Also, when entering a new record - these inserts fail because it seems the linking field (employee id) is not being filled out.

If i do check Live Link: The page loads - and we are on the General Tab. However, the Attendance grids also load (despite me not having navigated to that tab). This makes the page load extremely slow - although record insertion / everything else seems to work fine.

    Other Info:
The 'Coaching' tab does not load right away. I do not see this on page load. However, if I go into the Performance Tab and then Coaching - I then see an ajax callback for the coaching logs to load.

Has anyone experienced something similar to this? If so, how were you able to circumvent this?
Thanks in advance for your time!

Re: Alpha Nested Tabs with Embedded Grids (UX) - Slow Load

I prefer to use a button to load components like that and use arguments to set default values and to filter the called component. This reduces the initial load significantly, and has teh added benefit of allowing me to update portions of the application separately. So far thats the best method I have found to reduce load times when there are multiple linked components like that.

If I am not mistaken you can load them into the tab as well and not just a "window" - either way it's faster.

        Hi Charles,
Thanks for the response - unfortunately i do not believe the button approach is wanted.
The tabs and everything works nicely except for these extra loads.

It only seems to happen with the nested tabs (and the active tab on the nested tab).

So for example if there is a tab control with TAB1-4 and a tabcontrol nested into lets say TAB3.
If TAB3 has a nested control e.g. TABA with a pane active (TABA1) it seems TABA1 loads as part of page load DESPITE Tab 1 being the active tab on the parent.

Re: Alpha Nested Tabs with Embedded Grids (UX) - Slow Load

Pretty sure the tabs are nothing more than html - I think it is the component that is loading that is the problem right? Perhaps there is a way to load the content dynamically and I think that will solve your issue. Similar to the button click, the component should load when the tab is brought into view, now I am not exactly sure how to make that happen but thats the idea behind my suggestion. Let us know if you solve it to your satisfaction. Perhaps the checkbox to pre-render the html would help?
Other than that I do not see a satisfactory answer because I believe the idea behind a "nested" tab would be that it loads as part of the initial load of the parent tab, not unlike parent lists and child lists. I redesigned my larger UX and made smaller seperate components to help manage things and like I said earlier, it has added benefits. Hope you find an answer!

Re: Alpha Nested Tabs with Embedded Grids (UX) - Slow Load

Yep id assume the tab control is just html+javascript to control the changing / dynamic loading etc.

The component loading is definitely a problem and Loading the content dynamically on tab change would be the IDEAL solution - not sure how to make it happen either - going to have to look into that.

"I believe the idea behind a "nested" tab would be that it loads as part of the initial load of the parent tab," - If the parent tab is active I think this makes sense. However take the following example:

With a parent tab of GENERAL, PERFORMANCE, TESTING and a nested tab in PERFORMANCE (lets say PERFORMANCE1, PERFORMANCE2, PERFORMANCE3) it seems the active PERFORMANCE1 tab will load - EVEN if the the GENERAL tab is the first one selected. What ends up happening is on page load you are now loading all the stuff from performance1 - even if it is not being shown because GENERAL is the active tab on the parent. I think this may be an oversight in the tab control design / code. I will look into it a little more and see what I can come up with at some point.

Thank you for your input Charles.
