Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    email_send sent by value

Has anyone experienced this strange one...

    When using email_send(emale,subj,message,newname,"","",.f.,"text","","",.f.,.t.)
the email goes through fine and the attached PDF file (newname) is OK too.

The strange thing is that the Sent By value is "oldname" rather than by own ID.

    Any clues?

    Thanks.

That's what I said Stan! I emailed myself a letter as a test. I would have expected that when I looked at the email in the listing that the sent by value would have been my name but it read oldname instead. I don't get it either. I wonder if there is an email setting somewhere that is used when sending an email that should contain the name of the sender that is not set for some reason.

Testing the profiles (I have 2) both show the emails sent by my email address, as expected. The issue seems to lie in whatever differences there are behind the profile test routine and email_send().

By the way, no such issue appears when using email_client() but of course email_client() does not allow "behind-the-scenes" emails.

          the sent by value
          You mean the From:?

Using email_send() you can set the profile parameter to control that.

Yes Stan. The email_send() help does not show what to set for that. How is that done?

My copy of the documentation says

              Profile
The name of your email profile as found on the View > Settings > Email > Profiles tab.

                How about using email_send2()?

Odd. I tried to double check the options in the docs for email_send2() and as soon as I click on the entry.

Refreshed help topics, rebooted machine, same error.

That must be why I use the desktop help system.....

Sounds like you can send a bug report for the new help system....

Looks to me like this does what Gene wants. Hopefully without introducing an unwanted feature.....

Wasn't clear. It was the desktop help system. After the error message I can click on the documentation and view the entry but when I close the documentation Alpha closes.

                          Re: email_send sent by value

                          Result as N = email_send(C send_to ,C subject ,C message [,C attachments [,C cc [,C bcc [,L store_in_outbox [,C text_type [,C html_message [,C profile[,L zip_attach [,L lSilent [,L returnReceipt ]]]]]]]]]])
in email_send you can optionally set the profile. email_send is high level wrapper for email_send2, where you can easily specify various settings if you want. however you said you have two profiles in setting and did not mention the parts of the email settings and which is default. it is not clear if you have filled in your name in the sender name field in the profile. i did a test in my version 11 and email_send function, sent email has proper senders name (proper name and email address), i use gmail settings in the email settings.

                          i used
                          dim result as n
result = email_send("[email protected]", "test", "this is a test")
                          just that.
                          result came as 1

I am trying to attach a screen shot showing the code which resulted in the email "From" value as "oldname". The A5 email test came through just fine.
