Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

You receive an email when someone responds to the thread. While there is a 'threaded' mode that indicates some degree of message flow, there really isn't such thing as responding to an individual post.

This is one of the best things Alpha have done for users of the Forum.

I like the simpler syntax of the vB Code, it should be fun to play with.

            Spell Checker

            Aaron,

You know, of course, that a spell checked for Keith's side of the 'Big Pond' is different than for our side, right?

He'll just have to accept that the spell checker doesn't know what colour his aluminium armour is, that's all. ;)

                Message Board

Wow, certianly has a lot more features. The old one was compact which was nice. But you can do a lot more with this. Particularly search, once there is something to search. It's also interesting to see the number of views. Gives you an idea of the number of Alpha users out there that are silent. Lots.

                  Excellent.....

I always felt the old board had an antiquated look and feel that reflected poorly on Alpha. This looks modern.

I like this new format. You've got my vote on this! Any ideas on a date when A5V7 will be released in October?

Some of the things I miss about the old board.

I'm on dial-up and it was fast. No pictures or colors or extraneous graphics.
Messages were not editable; people took time to proof what they wrote.
I could see threads with new messages easily.
Search got old posts quite well.

but most of all I could refer to the parent or child of the message I was reading so easily my brain didn't notice. Now I can't find them all.

But I must compliment the members on their restraint in using the new tools.

                          A bug:

When using display mode threaded, the scrolling thread listbox gradually widens as various threads are selected to view, eventually obscuring the right hand listbox scrollbar unto oblivion.

This is on FireFox 1.04, Mac OS X Panther.

Have you tried going to the 'Display mode' menu and choosing 'Hybrid' or 'Threaded' mode?

But I don't quite get it. Linear is just a page of messages, flush left, in chronological order.

Threaded shows a nice map of name/first few words/time and a single message. You have to read a lot and scroll the map to know which message you are reading. Prev. and Next buttons are interesting.

Hybrid has a map and multiple messages. The message selected on the map is shown with its children (?). To find the parent, scroll the map until you find the selected message, follow the map, and then click the parent?

Hmmm, and Hybrid has this whole unusable Quick Reply box that just says to use a different Quick Reply!

I really liked the "expanded thread" view of showing the messages within the map.

I see what you mean. It's kinda like a crap shoot. You might go to the next message in the list or maybe not. I'm sure it just a simple HTML/JS bug of some sort.

Still, this format has "improvement" written all over it.
