Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Any mySQL guru here that can help me with an UPSERT ?

    Hi
In my scenario i have SourceOrderProducts and TargetOrderProducts tables with similar structures.
SourceOrderProducts : SourceLinePKID, OrderID, CatalogID, Quantity, Amount
TargetOrderProducts: TargetLinePKID, OrderID, CatalogID, Quantity, Amount
Those are target to a one to many where the parent is the Orders table.

I need to run an UPSERT from the Source to the Target, as follows:
    - if Source OrderID and CatalogID exist in Target, update fields Quantity and Amount in the target
    - if Source OrderID does not exist in Target, insert all rows from Source with that OrderID
    - if Target OrderID and CAtalogID does not exist in Source, delete it from Target table.

In Sql server , this is doable with one MERGE command. How is it done in mySQL? I've read about INSERT ...on DUPLICATE but don't have the required level to write the correct UPSERT command

    Thanks
    Jaime

Is this a one time merge you are trying to do or is it something that you will do every time one or the other table is modified?

If this is a one time thing, you should be able to do it will three SQL commands.

If this is NOT a one time thing, I would do it by creating triggers. The only problem might be your Target does not exist in Source requirement. You can't delete from the same table you are triggering from. So you might have to do that one in xbasic or by running a separate stored procedure after insert/update. But I don't know the specifics of what you are doing here.

If you are interested in help on this, send me a private message or maybe someone else will have a better idea.

In this case i already have a web service that retrieves records from the Source table for a specific OrderID.
I then need to run the UPSERT in the Target table.
This whole is triggered at a user request (Ajax callback)

If i don't find a mySql solution i'll indeed manually write all the commands for each request. Not very elegant but doable and it will work...

As I said, most of this could be done inside a trigger. MYSQL has very good trigger support. (Though it is different from MSSQL.)

If you can write the command for the request, you can likely turn that command into a trigger on the source table.

I see. Im writing all the commands right now will see how to turn it into a trigger afterwards

If you google UPSERT mysql, (at least when I did) it will take you to the MySQL manual for ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE. Basically, you set up a unique key in the table that will reject the duplicate key, then create an insert command with an ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE parameter, and then specify how to do the update. I use a stored procedure for that.

I think this should be done:
Mysql after_insert_trigger AND after_update_trigger on source table
Source is called NEW in syntax

              INSERT INTO targetorderproducts (orderid, catalogid,Quantity,amount) VALUES (new.orderid, new.catalogid, new.quantity, new.amount)
              ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE quantity=new.quantiy,amount=new.amount;

ofcourse orderid and catalogid must be a unique key in the table target.

              Mysql after_delete_trigger on source table
Source is called OLD in syntax
              delete from targetorderproducts
              where orderid = old.orderid and catalogid = old.catalogid limit 1;
