Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    MS SQL Temporary Table

    Two of us have looked at a temp table setup and use, and don't see what's wrong. At its base, we should be able to do this:

    Code:
    dim cn as sql::connection
    . . .
    ' Create #temp
    . . .
    ' Select from #temp
    . . .
    cn.close()
    But, from all appearances, the #temp table is not available after its creation. I know the syntax is correct because it works in Management studio. And in management studio I can query the #temp table as well. Without worrying about the syntax or such details, has anyone done this with success?

    I've even tried:

    Code:
    ' create #temp
    ' cn.execute("select count(*) from #temp")
    and the select fails.

    Using the current official build, in a web application, and have tried it with portableSQL on and off.

    Re: MS SQL Temporary Table

    You're not showing your code for the #temp table creation or how you're adding data to it after it's creation. Pseudo code is not appropriate. There is no Alpha Build/Version mentioned nor SQLServer Version.

    This works in the current release of Alpha and SQLServer16

    Code:
    	sqlCreate = "CREATE TABLE #temp (PersonId int, LastName varchar(255));"
    	result = cn.Execute(sqlCreate)

    	sqlInsert = <<%str%
    		INSERT INTO #temp (PersonId, LastName) VALUES(1, 'Smith')
    		%str%

    	result = cn.Execute(sqlInsert)

    	sqlSelect = "SELECT * FROM #temp;"

    	result = cn.Execute(sqlSelect)
    	rs = cn.ResultSet
    	dim myName as c = rs.data("LastName")

      Also, I think you need to name your count(*) to get the value back appropriately.

      The select statement should be:

      select count(*) as MyCount from #temp

      Then reference the MyCount field. Otherwise, you are referencing a field named count(*) and I don't know if Alpha would appreciate that.

        Alpha / SQL Server doesn't have a problem with SELECT count(*) from #temp

          Re: MS SQL Temporary Table

          Every indication is that the #temp table is correctly created.

          Here's the query:

          Code:
          SELECT sum(Balance)
          FROM #temp
          WHERE Reference1 = :Reference1
          	and Reference2 = :Reference2
          	and Bankdate <= :Late_Date
          But when I query it with portableSQL = .f., I get this callresult.text:

          Database API specific error
          Your database has returned the following error code and description to Alpha Five.
          Consult your database documentation for further information.
          102 - '[Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 11.0][SQL Server]Incorrect syntax near ':'.

          So I turn portableSQL = .t. and get:

          "unexpected char 't'"

          Changing the query by putting brackets around #temp with portableSQL = .t. :

          Code:
          SELECT sum(Balance)
          FROM [#temp]
          WHERE Reference1 = :Reference1_7
          	and Reference2 = :Reference2
          	and Bankdate <= :Late_Date
          and callresult.text is "Table not found"

            Re: MS SQL Temporary Table

            Steve,

            please show ALL of your code, from the connection string through creating the table and then through executing the select statement.

            If we don't see the whole thing we won't have the full picture.

            If there is some name or something we can't see, then cross that out or something, but we really need to see the actual Alpha code.

            For instance, that first error implies that you are not setting up/replacing the arguments properly.

            If you can't show all the code, here are some suggestions you might try:

            Remove all arguments and filters from the code.

            Create the table, insert a single hard-coded record to the table (no variables), then select a value from that single record, no filter, no anything.

            If that works, then you have an argument issue, not a temp table creation issue.

            I would not even include the portable SQL flag at all - let Alpha figure it out for itself unless you absolutely have to provide it.

              Re: MS SQL Temporary Table

              I know Larry - but what I'm doing is on the complex side, and I'm trying to simplify my question to make it answerable.

              But, this just in: it now returns the correct result with portableSQL = .t. It's still throwing a ton of errors at cn.callresult.text but I'm just ignoring that and getting the correct result.

              Here's a summary of what I'm doing:

              I need to get a few thousand sum() values with a complex SELECT query against about 4 million records. Even optimizing that complex SELECT statement wasn't enough - the process was taking 7 minutes.

              So by putting a subset of the 4 million records into the #temp table, and getting my SUM() values from there, the entire process is under 8 seconds, with a decent share of that being the initial SELECT INTO to create the #temp table, along with some other associated Xbasic instruction.

              Painful to get to this point but an excellent method for use in the future.

              This is the query that works with portableSQL = .t.:

              Code:
              SELECT sum(Balance)
              FROM #temp
              WHERE Reference1 = :Reference1
              	and Reference2 = :Reference2
              	and Bankdate <= :Late_Date

                  Glad to hear you finally revealed some much needed information... would have been nice in the first post. Millions of records.... would have gone a long way to "simplify" the question.
