Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Dbsum and table sum are not giving me the value I need

I am trying to post the table t_yearlyscores with the total count in the table t_archives of corresponding records that contain specific award.
There are many records in t_archives but unique records in t_yearlyscores based in photographer and season fields.
See attached image of the operation setup
In the sample of the image I get 66 which is the total awards in the t_archives. For all the records in t_yearlyscores.

    If use
    TABLESUM("T_Archives.dbf", "award= '1st Prize' " , "kount")
    TABLESUM("T_Archives.dbf", "award= '>"" ' " , "kount")
I get no values. Kount is a field in the table t_archive that has a default value of 1.

    Please advise

    TABLESUM("T_Archives.dbf", "award= '1st Prize' " , "kount")
should work and return a numeric value if there are any award fields with the value of 1st Prize.

    The second should be
TABLESUM("T_Archives.dbf", "award >='' " , "kount") 'two single quotes in red
    There can be only one.

What happens when you apply the filters to a browse of the data?

Or if you build a summary operation to get the values?

        You could also try:
        TABLESUM("T_Archives.dbf", "alltrim(award)= '1st Prize' " , "kount")

Re: Dbsum and table sum are not giving me the value I need

Doing in query of the table, will return the right number for each individual.
          In the posting does not.
The problem is that I get 0 or 66. As I said earlier, there are 66 records of 1st prize for all the people.
The way I see it, is that I have to have the filter where I can add multiple filter to the line of tablesum or tablecount
other wise returns the value for 1st prizes.
The filter must reflect not only the award field but also the photgrpher.
I believe Tablesum can only take simple filter.
TABLESUM("T_Archives.dbf", "alltrim(award)= '1st Prize' " , "kount") returns all first prize in the table
So I think tablecount could use award= var xxx that contain "1st Prize and photogrpher being processed.

          I have tried many combinations.

              Wrong.

To add the "photogrphr" field you need to .and. it to the current filter.

              Something like

              TABLESUM("T_Archives.dbf", "award= '1st Prize' .and. photogrphr = 'Joe' " , "kount")
              There can be only one.

                Thanks to all.
The TABLESUM("T_Archives.dbf", "award= '1st Prize' .and. photogrphr = 'Joe' " , "kount") did not work, as this would not be good in the operation.
After reviewing this thread, notice that Al mentioned summary tables.
I did use summary tables and they seem to give me what I want.
I did create a couple of them under different groupings and they will give me the needed values.
It is easy now, just post the values from the summary tables to the t_yearlyscores table.

I should have use this method and saved countless hours and taking you guys time too.
                Thanks to all.

Very likely it did work but was not suitable to what you wanted to do.

Tablesum() will accept any filter you can design but that filter must be converted to a character string expression. Since the summary operation(s) yielded what you want it would appear that you found your solution.
                  There can be only one.

Yes, that is correct. Actually there was going to be more extractions and with difficult steps, summary was the the best course.
