Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    In-Line Javascript Call to Report

    Super excited about Alpha. I've been using it for a month. Not used to this style of IDE and that's been the slowest learning curve, but now I'm picking it up. But I ran into an interest issue:

    Can someone direct me to how to call a report from javascript and pass in a filter?

    I have a checkbox column in a grid populated by a database view. Unfortunately not a table and therefore no primary key. So I wrote a nifty toolbar action inline-javascript function that creates a partial where clause (IN '2347', '2348', '2380', '2400').

    That's as far as I've gotten. Here is the code snippet that gets the filter:

    var rowValues = '';
    var count=0;

    for(i = 1; i <= {grid.Object}._rowsInGrid; i++)
    {
    var ele = $('{grid.componentname}.V.R' + i + '.__ROWCHECKBOX');
    if($gvs(ele) != '')
    {
    // Get the object ID innerText which contains the cell value.
    rowValues += "'" + $('{grid.componentname}.TD.R' + i + '.TICKETNUM').innerText + "',";
    count++;
    }
    }

    if(count > 0)
    {
    // This removes the trailing comma
    rowValues = rowValues.substring(0, rowValues.length - 1);
    rowValues = 'IN (' + rowValues + ')';
    }

    alert(rowValues);

    // NOW: How do I call a report named Rock Ticket.a5rpt and pass in the rowValues as a filter????

    Re: In-Line Javascript Call to Report

    Hey John... welcome to Alpha. You're working with a Grid (I prefer UX... but...) and what you'll need is another Action Button to run your Report. You'll use the Action Javascript "Open a Report, Label or Letter Layout" for your Report button Javascript.

    In the "Open a Report..." dialog you'll use a SQL Filter. Click the ... for SQL Filter and the dialog that opens will help you build all the bits.

    Read all the Links in this dialog... e.g. What are arguments?... and when you set the Argument Value there's a More Information... all good stuff.

    First, click the Define Arguments button. Here.. add an Argument named array_argKeys... and make it Numeric. Your argument must start with "array_" because that's what you're passing for the IN clause.

    Now you can Build your SQL Filter

    Choose your Target Field and then add IN after it and then open paren ( then click on Insert Argument, select your argument, and close off the paren.

    Your SQL Filter will be...

    Code:
    TicketNum IN (:array_argKeys)
    Assuming you're filtering on your SQL Data field named TicketNum. Click OK on the builder.

    In the bottom section of the dialog you have a place to Set Argument Values. Your argument should be there, so double-click on the Argument. Here you can enter a Javascript function.

    In the Argument Value enter...

    Code:
    (Javascript:getKeys)
    Assuming getKeys is the name of your Javascript function.

    You're javascript function will be the following... but a bit different than your code. You won't be using the Toolbar In-Line section you create... just the JS code.

    Code:
    function getKeys(rowNum){

    	var rowValues = '';
    	var count=0;

    	for(i = 1; i <= {grid.Object}._rowsInGrid; i++){
    		var ele = $('{grid.componentname}.V.R' + i + '.__ROWCHECKBOX');
    		if($gvs(ele) != '')	{
    			// Get the object ID innerText which contains the cell value.
    			rowValues += "'" + $('{grid.componentname}.TD.R' + i + '.TICKETNUM').innerText + "',";
    			count++;
    		}
    	}

    	if(count > 0){
    		// This removes the trailing comma
    		rowValues = rowValues.substring(0, rowValues.length - 1);
    		return rowValues;
    	}

    }
    You don't need to provide the IN part or parens... you only need comma delimited data. In this case, the data doesn't need to be quoted.

    You're returning '2347', '2348', '2380', '2400' or 2347,2348,2380,2400

    it doesn't matter in this case. You also don't need the extra space after the comma... but again... doesn't really matter.

    So... overall... you're establishing a SQL Filter and passing in an Argument. That Argument is an Array... and that Array is created by the Javascript Function named getKeys.

    Generally, I think there's a bit better way to do this... but... this is a really excellent example of putting together a number of pieces to get stuff to work in Alpha.

    You could also define a Javascript Action to get this done... just depends on how you want to assemble everything.

    Cheers.

      Thank you for the thorough post. I'm sure others can use it as an example too. I'll give it a go today and let you know.

          Re: In-Line Javascript Call to Report

          Good to hear. I just went through kinda the same process. I needed to create a simple report based on rows selected from a List. The data source for the Report is an XBasic function and the format for the data is JSON. Since the List selected rows is an object I turned them into JSON, stuffed them into a control on the UX and then pointed the report argument to that control. Very nice.
