Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Searching for a range in a list

    When setting up a search in a grid, you can easily do a range search. So if you want all dates between two dates, you create a from and to date in the search and you are good to go.

    Lists are supposed to be a good replacement for a grid, and for the most part they are, but this feature is completely missing from the search portion of a list.

    I realize I can create controls and filter the list myself using javascript - and I have done that before - but that negates the ease of creation of the list control with a search feature.

    Am I missing a simple solution?

    If you set up the search for QBE then you can enter 20..40 in the search and it will show everything in that range.

      I don't see that option in the list control.

        Serverside not client side. So QBE is a listed option of the Serverside genie it is very easy to use.

        The and syntax is a little complex clientside if you need to do the search clientside I can look up an old project and post it back

          Providing Start Date and End Date search controls, you can put this on a Search button for a Client-side range filter. Alpha lets us set up a function within the .setFilter method.

          Code:
          var lObj = {dialog.Object}.getControl('LISTORDERS');
          var sDate = new Date();
          var eDate = new Date();
          sDate.fromFormat({dialog.Object}.getValue('SEARCH_sDate'),'dd/MM/yyyy');
          eDate.fromFormat({dialog.Object}.getValue('SEARCH_eDate'),'dd/MM/yyyy');
          {dialog.Object}.__filterDates = {};
          {dialog.Object}.__filterDates.sDate = sDate;
          {dialog.Object}.__filterDates.eDate = eDate;
          lObj.setFilter(
          	{
          	OrderDate:function(val){
          		var chkDate = new Date();
          		chkDate.fromFormat(val,'dd/MM/yyyy');
          		if(chkDate >= {dialog.Object}.__filterDates.sDate && chkDate <= {dialog.Object}.__filterDates.eDate) return true;
          			else return false;
          		}
          	}
          );

            While the above suggestions work, they are not necessary. The "Filter list" action in Action Javascript has allowed you to define range searches for some time now. Range searches for a List control work essentially the same as they do in a Grid.

              Do you mean the Action Javascript "Filter Records in a List Control"? I don't see a "Filter List" Action.

              Although the type of search required is unspecified (Client or Server), "Filter Records in a List Control" performs a Server-side search. How can the suggested implementation of a Client-side Search or a Server-side QBE Search be un-necessary? Are you suggesting that only method that should be used for a Range List Search is the Action Javascript "Filter Records in a List Control"?

                David,

                First of all, my original post was from 2 years ago. Not sure why it's popping back up now.

                Second, my original post addresses date range searches, which are much easier to do using a server side search than with a client side search. (At least in my opinion.)

                I utilize both client side and server side searches in many different list controls. It all depends on your particular needs for your particular application. But Selwyn was addressing my initial request and proposing the easiest solution for what I was looking for.

                  Agreed. Also unsure why it's popping up a couple of years later. However, it's the "they are not necessary" that had me questioning Selwyn's post. As you point out, it all depends on your needs.
                  Your original post did not specify your requirement for a server-side filter. Aren't a couple of possible solutions ok?
