Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Easiest way to convert a Alpha 5 v10 relational database to another program

My Windows 7 is having problems and it looks like I will have to change over to a Windows 10 computer. Many years ago I created a great relational database program for my wife's business. But I know I will no longer be able to use this program on a Windows 10 or Apple Computer with parralel running Windows 10. I don't believe Alpha's current version of their database will convert my present database to their format. This is a standard relationship database that does not run on the internet, just the local computer. I would like to know the quickest way to copy all aspects of this database to a program that will run either on a mac or pc with windows 10. It basically has 4 individual data bases related to one another. As I am a bit older my ability to to do things computerwise that I used to have been greatly compromised so I would like the quickest and easiest sdolution. Thanks in advance for your help.

You may be borrowing trouble before it arrives.

Search this forum for message board threads discussing Windows 10. Others seem to be using A5v10 with it just fine. See this thread, for example. I think there are others.

What version of alpha are you using?
If a dos version, your tables can be used in v11 or v12 or a small conversion to do the same. The application will not be so lucky.
if a windows version, It may be a bit easier.
if alpha v7 or later, it is pretty easy
I and a number of others on here do these conversions as a standard practice.
alpha v10 may run ok in win10, depending on the features used. It probably will do fine/better just updating to v11 or v12.

We were running Windows 7 on our PC's and upgraded them all to Windows 10 Pro.

We have had no issues running Alpha Five V10 in what is called compatibility mode on Windows 10.

You cannot run Alpha Five V10 in native Windows 10 mode, you will see the following message if you do ...

"Notice: Alpha Five is not licensed for this operating system.
Contact Alpha Software at www.alphasoftware.com for upgrade information"

After installing Alpha Five V10 Developer or Runtime you will have to go to C:\Program Files\a5V10\alpha5.exe or C:\Program Files\a5V10 Runtime\alpha5.exe and
open Properties > Compatibility > Compatibility mode > Run this program in Compatibility mode for: Then Select Windows 7 from the drop down menu.
