Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Combine two tables in a browse?

Re: Combine two tables in a browse?

My other approach isn't working quite as well as I had hoped, so I'm revisiting this possibility.

Mike, my example was four separate people, all from the same household. Currently, the member is in one table, and his dependents are in a different table. It appears to me that it really isn't possible to show them in one browse or list unless they are combined in another table.

The idea of displaying a report is intriguing, but I think it would be too cumbersome. Can a report be automatically generated and displayed on a form as soon as a record is displayed on the form?

Re: Combine two tables in a browse?

We'll spin our wheels until you provide an example with multiple entries. Please use fake names and fake data.

Do you want to show only one client and their dependants or is the a multiple level of parent - child - grandchild -.......?

You need a linkage field that identifies the parent to child (you may have that already.) Like Robin's example in this thread.

Then if you look up a child, you'll know who the parent is and can change the fetch on the form to use the parent id.

We can help you with the mechanics with an example from you.

Re: Combine two tables in a browse?

Is this not a simple case of stacking up tables in a Set and then filtering each Browse placed in the Form? Or have I misunderstood?

Re: Combine two tables in a browse?

I'm with John Koh Post #4. And the "temp" table need not be temporary you just zap and update as needed. But if you're not comfortable w. xbasic that might not work for you.

You can embed a report in a form if that helps.

Re: Combine two tables in a browse?

Probably the easiest would be to create a report built on the set with group breaks. Then you could put a hot spot on the report which could call up a filtered browse.

I know that using a UX component, you can build a list just like you want. I've done it. I don't know if you can use the UX on the desktop side. It's been reported that
some people have been building WEB components and using them on the desktop side.

Re: Combine two tables in a browse?

i think the temp table or a table that gets updated whenever the data is entered either in the member table or the dependent table will be the best way to do, and the combined table should have table structure something like this to accomplish what is needed
                id numeric, decimal 2
                name
                so the parent will have
id numeric auto increment no decimal
                the dependent will have
id numeric, auto increment no decimal
                the combined table will have
id user entered numeric decimal 2
the final table will have data
                1.00 member
                1.01 first child
                1.02 second child
                2.00 member
                2.01 first child
                2.02 second child etc.,
then the browse if ordered by id based on this table will show the data as expected.
this is a concept, i am no way comfortable to write this out in xbasic.

What was the search you did to find those videos at YouTube?

I didn't try it but after watching the video, I checked the WEB components actions in action scripting. I see the opening a UX component is a choice.
If you want, you can do what you want using a UX component, list, with groups.

@Robin. I believe it was something like "Grid on Alpha Desktop". Let mee look and I'll post what I find.

Edit. This is what I put in.

Thanks to all for your input. I think I've settled on using the other solution that I mentioned earlier, in which I don't need to have the tables combined in one browse.
