Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Tif to PDF function

    Has anyone created such a function?
    I guess it would be like this

    Syntax
    C tif_to_pdf(C tiffilename [,C pdfFilename [,* printOptions ]])

    I assume it would use
    Sys_print
    The amunyi print driver
    And not sure if print options can be used

    Thanks
    Terry

      a5_runImageMagicCommand(drive_path_filename.tif_in_quotes,drive_path_filename.pdf_in_quotes,"magick")

      Just tested and the final parameter is not important so long as you don't need one of the transformations that imagemagick supports.

      a5_runImageMagicCommand(drive_path_filename.tif_in_quotes,drive_path_filename.pdf_in_quotes,"")

      performs the same conversion as the initial suggestion.

        Is ImageMagick bundled with the Alpha software as I have tried to test & cannot get this working.

          Yes. a5_runImageMagicCommand() is in the Alpha documentation.

          What precisely did you try?

          This works here.

          Code:
          a5_runimagemagiccommand("c:\temp\flower.jpeg","c:\temp\flower.pdf","")

            My code as follows:-

            a5_runimagemagiccommand("C:\emailtmp\test.tif","C:\emailtmp\newtest.pdf","")

            just seems to hang for a while & then does nothing.

            I notice your example is not a tif file.

              Re: Tif to PDF function

              I originally downloaded a tif and tried it to verify that the command works with that file type. I didn't keep the tif and the sample code I posted was just to illustrate the parameters.

              Run your code from the interactive as

              rslt = a5_runimagemagiccommand("C:\emailtmp\test.tif","C:\emailtmp\newtest.pdf","")

              Then

              ? rslt

              will show you the success or failure message.

              You might double check the file type extension if it isn't visible. I just tried

              ? a5_runimagemagiccommand("c:\temp\e02.tif","c:\temp\a.png","")
              = errorText = "ImageMagic command did not execute successfully. Command: "
              hasError = .T.

              but this worked.

              ? a5_runimagemagiccommand("c:\temp\e02.tiff","c:\temp\a.png","")
              = errorText = ""
              hasError = .F.

              and

              ? a5_runimagemagiccommand("c:\temp\e02.tiff","c:\temp\a.pdf","")
              = errorText = ""
              hasError = .F.

                  I have tested with a small file and it appears to work perfectly, do you know if there is a maximum input file size?
                  some more results
                  rslt=a5_runimagemagiccommand("C:\emailtmp\under5000kbtest.tif","C:\emailtmp\under5000kbtest.pdf","")

                    Re: Tif to PDF function

                    I'm not aware of any limitation but the documentation is sparse. I tested with a 13.5 meg file and had no problem. It could be a memory capacity issue I suppose.

                      Re: Tif to PDF function

                      I cannot begin to express my excitement of learning of this function. OMG, thank you Stan!!! The business that I've been building an information system for engages in a serious number of graphic art files that begin with Concept art in .ai format, sent to Graphics for art templating that our graphics folks return to us for production as very large, rasterized TIF files. Our system art library and our printers require that we convert the big TIF images into a thumbnail size version to import into our library system and for delivering to our printers. To this point, this has required these big TIF files be opened manually in Photoshop and reduced and converted to a workable JPG file for our library and for the printer. This function will allow me to have this done in a snap!! I Googled this application and the following is an example of a one line command that will reduce a large TIF file to a small, workable BMP file. While testing this it appears that .ai files are not capable of being handled with this, I can certaily use it well none-the-less.

                      https://www.imagemagick.org/script/mogrify.php

                      a5_runimagemagiccommand("C:\art\imc_test.tif","C:\art\imc_test.bmp","mogrify -resize 1500x256 *.bmp")

                        Mike.....you might take a look at Advanced Batch Converter and then use sys_shell() and/or sys_shell_wait() and pass the command line to it for the Advanced Batch Converter software. I use this for converting a word document to pdf. They list .AI files as one of the files they convert.

                          I stand corrected. I just checked my code and I am using a program called doc2any.

                          http://www.verydoc.com/doc-to-any-cmd.html

                          I am not sure if the Advanced Batch Converter program I referenced above has a command line.

                          Sorry for any confusion....

                          Jeff

                          EDIT: I just checked and the Advanced Batch Converter software does offer command line....so it might work for you.

                            a5_runimagemagiccommand("C:\art\imc_test.tif","C:\art\imc_test.bmp","mogrify -resize 1500x256 *.bmp")
                            OK, of course now when I need it, it doesn't work.

                              Works fine here when I modify the command to reference my files.

                              Code:
