Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Need help with (localDB)

    Hi Everyone,

I was looking forward to using the MS SQL localDB packaged with AlphaAnywhere 4.3.
Unfortunately, after I got the connection string figured out, I was unable to connect to it.
Does anyone know what needs to be done to fix this problem ?

    Thanks much,

    Gregg

    Re: Need help with (localDB)

even though i don't have version 12, first change the name of the server from localdb to the name of the computer\servername, then try again.
    see if it works.

    eg: GANDHIG\SQLEXPRESS

Open Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio... and the "Server name:" used to connect to your instance is the name you'll use in the AlphaDAO Connection "Server" field. Since you can name your instance anything you want, then you need to get that specific name.

I appreciate the responses, but I think I'm missing something.

The feature I'm trying to use is described here :https://www.alphasoftware.com/docume...%20LocalDB.xml

Sorry... missed that part. There may still exist an issue for Alpha/LocalDB

          Alpha_LocalDB.PNG

The instance is installed... as I can use SSMS to connect to (localdb)\AlphaAnywhere.

Now... I do have SQLServer2016 and SQLServer2014 installed... but they don't seem to affect anything to do with (localdb)\AlphaAnywhere... that I can see.

Try this... instead of setting the Version to 2016, set it to 2014 or 2012. Setting the Version to 2016 resulted in a connection error for me.

Setting the Version to 2014 succeeded. However, there isn't a SQL Northwinds database available in (localdb)\AlphaAnywhere... if that's what you wanted as well.

That sucks, but at least I know now I'm not completely wacky.
I was starting to think I was doing something wrong (I currently have no sql of any kind installed on this machine)
and I received failures trying 2014 and 2012.

              Re: Need help with (localDB)

I would give this a try... install SqlLocalDB yourself. I've not done this because I usually install full versions... but... what the heck.

              Go here... https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down....aspx?id=42299

This is SQL Server 2014... so I think Version 12 of LocalDB. It's all pretty much nuts... but there you go.

Click Download to select the LocalDB 32BIT\SqlLocalDB.msi install. Then maybe, just maybe, the (localdb)\AlphaAnywhere Server name will work under Version 2014.

Remember, though, that SQL Server 2016 Developer is a full version and free. It's all a pain to install... but what else have you got to do.

                gregg,
the article you posted has the naming convention for the server name, did you replace the localdb with that name and try?
when i read your connection string in the image it says (localDB)\alphaanywhere, may be that is an example they gave. if you go down the page they tell you what to replace for the alpha anywhere
                try that first.

                Version Default Server Name
                SQLLocalDB v11.0 (localdb)\v11.0
                SQLLocalDB v12.0 (localdb)\MSSQLLocalDB
                SQLLocalDB v13.0 (localdb)\MSSQLLocalDB

edit: also is that localDB running?
if nothing works, just like david said install 2016 sql server express it is free and i did not find it difficult. mine is express may be that, not full version.

If you don't need the ODBC Version 13 driver, uninstall it and install ODBC Version 11. ODBC Version 11 works with all versions of SQLLocalDB (2012, 2014, and 2016.)

We are keeping tabs on Microsoft for a fix.

You should install x64 unless you're running a 32-bit operating system.

FYI: If you try to install the x86 version on a 64-bit machine, the ODBC 11 installer will give you an error message:

Installation of this product failed because it is not supported on this operating system. For information on supported configurations, see the product documentation.

So... SqlLocalDB is installed by Alpha automatically. But, the Microsoft V13 ODBC Driver has a bug that prevents it from connecting to SqlLocalDB. So... we'd need to get to Programs and Features, find Microsoft ODBC Driver 13 for SQL Server and uninstall it. Then install Microsoft ODBC Driver 11 for SQL Server.

                              Is this right Sarah? Thanks.
