Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Edit field Rules with Xbasic?

    I would like to make a change to the format of Telephone field in field rules with Xbasic.

    Is there a way to do this? If yes how?

    All help gratefully received.

    Yes, field rules alteration has been discussed here before. It is also covered in the documentation.

    The local documentation is a bit more helpful than the online.

      The phone number mask rule in the AlphaSports sample table leads me to believe that changing the format of the mask (if that's what you want) isn't quite as straight forward as some of the other modifications. To change the mask character from # to @ for example

      Code:
      tbl = table.open("customer")
      rul = tbl.rules_get()
      tst =  rul.PHONE.to_string()
      rul.change_begin()
      '? tst 'commented outlines used in interactive to discover rule details
      '=  LONGNAME=~Phone Number~ MASK_MODE=2 DESC=~Customer's voice telephone number~ MASK=~&~ MASK_TABLE:COUNT=1 MASK_TABLE:COND0:EQN=~LEN(ALLTRIM(CUSTOMER->BILL_STATE_REGION))<3.OR.CUSTOMER->BILL_COUNTRY="".OR.CUSTOMER->BILL_COUNTRY="USA"~ MASK_TABLE:MASK0=~(###) ###-####~ 'MASK_TABLE:TEMP0=~(   )|   -    ~ MASK_PLACE_HOLDER=95
      tst = stritran(tst,"#","@")
      rul.PHONE.from_string(tst)
      rul.change_end()
      tbl.close()
      The proper use of stritran() should allow you to do most anything.

        Hi Stan,

        Many thanks for code. You are correct I was trying to change the Mask.

        This code works perfectly providing a rule has been set up.

        What do I need to change to make the rule a simple mask and then affect the change?

          It is a bit tricky because a simple mask requires a template definition and the template dot variable/parameter doesn't exist until the type is set to "Simple". The type variable does exist because it is initially "None". It would look like this given appropriate table and field names. Using a simple mask you don't need the .to_string() etc from the earlier suggestion. All the variables are available directly.

          Code:
          tbl = table.open("salespeople")
          rul = tbl.rules_get()
          rul.change_begin() 'change the mask type to "Simple"
          rul.phone2.mask.Type = "Simple"
          rul.change_end() 'once this is changed then the Template is available to change
          rul.change_begin() 'so we change it here
          rul.PHONE2.Mask.Template =  "(###) ###-####"
          rul.change_end()
          tbl.close()

            Stan,

            Many thanks again. What you have shown makes perfect sense and does the job.

            Can now do a patch to client's app instead of full copy.
