Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Alpha 4 version 8 disk needed

Unfortunately, I have lost my Version 8 disks. I have version 1-6. I had stopped using Alpha for about 10 years but now find it the easiest to work with and had a computer specially built with Windows XP to accommodate Alpha 4. I loaded the program for another computer that broke and it was working but suddenly the a4v8.exe file is missing. Is it possible to get replacement disks? Thank you.

    Re: Alpha 4 version 8

One of the moderators will probably move your post into the Alpha Four area. I do hope someone can help you. I don't believe Alpha has that version available but one of the users might make you a copy.
    There can be only one.

The disks? That would be fantastic. I would even pay for them.

I ran across the disk a few weeks ago. I don't remember which part of the hoard it's in, so I'll have to put my hands on it again.
Do you have an install key (license) for the program? If so, I'll copy the CD for you and send you a copy.

I found the CD, but my DVD drive in this laptop thinks it's a blank disk. Obviously, I have some more research to do on it.

Re: Alpha 4 version 8 disk needed

Well, the program installs fine from the CD drive on my old XP machine. I don't have a license key for it, but you are welcome to use this CD to repair your install. But you will have to have your license number for it. Just let me know and I'll mail it out to you. It's obviously a copy protected disk and I don't think I have a suitable copy program for it. If you have a license, and this works to repair your install, you can keep it because it won't work for me without a license. Not sure if Alpha will even sell a license for it; I may check into it because it is already installed on my machine, but has not been activated or used because I don't have a license number to make it work.

I have Alpha Four V8 right here on my desk. But you say you are using it with XP?
I spoke with Alpha recently regarding a problem I'm now experiencing with Alpha Five V5, and they told me that the version of A5 that is compatible with Vista, which is the computer we're trying to move our Alpha work to, is A5 V11. They wanted to sell a developer's license at $499 per year minimum before they would even talk to me. We've tried installing our A5V5 disc in our Vista computer, but it would not work.

                            Keith,
Have you tried compatibility mode on your Vista computer for v5? Seems like I remember users making it work on Vista. If you do try it, post back to let all know.

To me personally anyone is speaking Greek when using the phrase "compatibility mode." However, I just made an appointment for a computer tech to come by in a couple of days, so I added that to my notes for the Vista computer. I will have him see about changing the name of the computer to what I believe was used on the Win98 computer, then check the compatibility mode, and perhaps A5V5 will load then. I'll post here later this week to update the results.
                              Thanks!
