Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Desktop App using the camera in a Surface Tablet

    Hi All:

Has anyone had any experience integrating the tablet camera with a desktop application? I've done some looking online and it doesn't seem like there's a Twain driver for the tablet camera, which leaves me wondering how I could grab the images, name them etc. Does anyone have any ideas, suggestions?

    Thanks
    Finian

    Good idea Finian.
One option which works in practice is to capture photos on the tab and have Dropbox or another Cloud based repository with auto upload. I have a Synology server which has a free CloudSynch app to grab any cloud based data from a named repository and store it locally.
If you can find a CloudSynch product, you should be able to join the dots.

Same problem Ted somehow. I have about a year old version and no plans to update anymore.

I think the new pricing will make a few people suck their teeth before deciding. There is a philosophy that in times of recession, instead of dropping orices, you should increase them. The rationale is that you end up with fewer customers who need supporting, but increased revenues.
I have seen it work - when there is little competition - but also seen it crash and burn when there is a lot of competition.

Having said that, I'm sure that the USA has a strong economy.

Re: Desktop App using the camera in a Surface Tablet

Things are a little bit in limbo at the moment. I expect that in a day or two I'll have access to the tablet which is some variety of Surface-like Dell machine. I want to get on there and investigate a little before I commit myself.

I keep hoping that some straightforward approach will present itself, but that may not be the case. It doesn't look like a Twain type solution will be possible. Tomorrow I'll try some research to see if there is some kind of .Net approach that I might try, but while I've done something like that in the past, I had a well-documented API to work from and I somehow doubt I'm going to find that. Then there's Ken''s mention of NodeJS to consider. I've done brief looks at NodeJS a couple of times and I honestly can't make sense of it. Ken provided a link (thanks Ken) to camera-related Nodejs api's but, on first look, most of the materials seem related to mobile (Android and IOS) and not to Windows, which the available tablet is.

My final option is to modify an available web-app to fit its picture-taking features into our situation. I should have a better idea as this week progresses. We are busy adding other new cameras and picture taking to our setup and, right now, that has priority.

Thanks to all for your ideas.
