Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Does Session Lifetime renew itself?

How exactly does the "Sessions / Lifetime in minutes" Web Application Server setting work?

I have users that claim to get timed-out within 20 minutes or sometimes within as little as 3 minutes when using the system. I don't know if they are counting from the time they logged into the system or from the time they saved or requested data to/from the server. I have Session_Timeout set to "14400" in the .xml file, which should correspond to 4 hours. So, not matter how they count that 3 - 20 minutes there is no way they should get session timeouts, unless the Session_Lifetime count down timer does not reset itself. Unless there is another mechanism on top of Alpha that is causing the timeout, like the load balancer or something on the clients' network side, right?

My users need to have the application open for 12 hours at a time. I cannot have an application that keeps timing out on them.

Does anyone have an Alpha web app the lets the users remain logged in during their work shift? If so, how did you get it to work.

Re: Does Session Lifetime renew itself?

The session is renewed every time a client makes a request to the server.

For apps like you describe here, I run a tiny bit of javascript that requests a 1Kb graphic from the server every n seconds. So for instance, the session timeout might be set to 15 minutes, but the javascript fires every 5000 ms to keep renewing the session. This goes on the main page header/container that will always be loaded. And, of course, it's dependent on the device being on, the web app loaded, the availability of an internet connection, etc.

You mentioned load balancers, and these can be a common cause of what seems to be premature session expiration. If you are using a load balancer, it must be configured to enforce session affinity. If a balancer directs a request to a different Application Server than the one that the client had been using previously for this session for any reason, the session will not be found on the new Application Server and a new session will be started for that client.

        Steve Workings,
You said, "the javascript fires every 5000 ms to keep renewing the session." That would be every five seconds. Did you mean to say 50,000 ms? That would be every 50 seconds.

I found out the default installation of a shared system load balancer, used by the hosting site, has a 60 second default timeout! So, as users typically take more than 60 seconds to complete a form in the app, their session (from the load balancer's perspective) would be forgotten and they might randomly have their postback routed to a different instance of Alpha which would have no knowledge the Alpha session.

Yes, sorry, every 500,000 ms in one of my current applications.

            Hi Steve,

I have the same issue, even when the user does save or retrieve data from the server. Can you please provide a bit more detail on how to implement your solution?
