Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Database Sync -- Desktop to Web

I am pondering how I could build a A5 Desktop app for use in a off-grid scenario. About once per month the user has internet connectivity. When the user has this connectivity, I would like to be able to sync their desktop database to an A5 Web server running a MySQL database.

during this one month will the a5 webserver change the data in the mysql database, so that you will have two different data or no one will access the mysql and all you need is just update the back end?

Only when the remote users is online or has a connection. Data is synced, then transactions or changes to the database are accomplished. When the user is in the field they are collecting data and doing some manipulations of that data. But the home office is just looking at history.

I don't understand what the question is? Can't the desktop app have a connection string pointing to the MySql data? I don't know if your desktop app is dbf? Regardless, you could have active-link tables locally, or maybe in your case passive-link would be better? Pull in the data once a month. I guess I don't understand what you want to do?

          Peter,

Here is a diagram of what I am hoping todo. It has been such a long time since I have worked in the desktop side so I am a bit rusty on passive and active linked tables.

            Michael,

I guess active-link wouldn't work since you are mostly disconnected. But passive-link is basically just a dbf table that pulls data from the sql connection whenever you want (when you know you have a connection). Create the p-link tables when you have a connection (or use a copy of the MySql tables). Once created they have an "identical" dbf structure to the MySql counterparts. You can right-click on the table in the controlpanel - or use an xbasic command to "refresh" the p-l tables, which pulls data from the MySql connection into the p-l table(s). I'm thinking it overwrites the data in the local table, but not 100% sure about that.

              take a look,
database replication is the best option, as far as i know. scripting and uploading and decompressing is lot of work you never know what went wrong. with replication, it is my understanding original is copied changes applied then if okay copy replaces original. your desktop will be the master and the webserver one will be the slave.
