Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Blank Records

    How do you prevent a user from saving blank records.

    #2
    Re: Blank Records

    One way is to immediately delete blank records after they are saved.
    The onsaverecord event in the table field rules can be utilized, the below deletes the record if the id field is left blank.

    Code:
    tbl = table.current()
    if alltrim(tbl.id) = ""
    	tbl.change_begin()
    	tbl.delete()
    	tbl.change_end()
    end if
    Another would be to display an xdialog with variables to capture the necessary field values for a record and validate the entries before writing the variables to table fields.

        Re: Blank Records

        I chose the second of Stan's recommendations and I use this code to assist with preparing such dialogs.

        Code:
        dim vcollect as C=""
        dim vscope as C="shared"

        dim vtbl as C="[COLOR="#FF0000"]your_table_here[/COLOR]"
        dim vLfields as C=""
        vLfields=table.external_field_name_get(vtbl,"n,t,w")

        dim vfn as C=""
        dim vft as C=""
        dim vfw as C=""
        dim vfield_var_dim as C=""
        dim vLt_dot_field_equals as C=""
        dim vLvar_equals_tbl as C=""
        dim vdlg_fields as C=""
        for each foo in vLfields
        	vfn=alltrim(word(foo,1,","))
        	vft=alltrim(word(foo,2,","))
        	vfw=alltrim(word(foo,3,","))
        	vLt_dot_field_equals=vLt_dot_field_equals+"tss."+vfn+"=v"+vfn+crlf()
        	vLvar_equals_tbl=vLvar_equals_tbl+"v"+vfn+"=alltrim(tss."+vfn+")"+crlf()

        	vfield_var_dim=vfield_var_dim+"dim "+vscope+" v"+vfn+" as "+vft+crlf()
        	vdlg_fields=vdlg_fields+"{sp=3}{font=Arial,9,bi}"+vfn+": | {font=Arial,10}[."+(""+(int(val(vfw)*2)))+"v"+vfn+"!ev"+left(vfn,2)+"_*] ;"+crlf()
        next

        	vcollect=vfield_var_dim+crlf(2)+vLvar_equals_tbl+crlf(2)+vdlg_fields+crlf(2)+vLt_dot_field_equals+crlf()
        	clipboard.Set_Data(vcollect)

        msgbox("done")

              Re: Blank Records

              I have an excel data source with several rows, when I use this source MailMerge using Microsoft word, I encounter a problem, for some cases, the word document has blank fields (meaning, there are no record in excel, but due to word template, there are pages, but without the data from excel - with only the template contents). I'm currently working on a VBA to automate my Mailmerge, but because of this, my macro doesn't work that efficiently. Your help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!!

                Re: Blank Records

                I suggest you ask one of the moderators to move your post to the proper forum. The thread to which you attached your question deals with preventing blank records being entered in a native Alpha dbf in a desktop application. It has nothing to do with mailmerge, VBA, macros, or excel. All of your previous posts seem to have been in the Web/Mobile forum area. This is not that.
