Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Windows Server 2012 Update Help

I have a Windows Server in my home that has stopped receiving Windows Updates. I have tried everything I can find on the web, but I can't get it to work.

The server works fine otherwise, but I can't install the latest version of Alpha to it, because I can't install the latest .net Framework because my Windows Update is corrupted.

If I can fix the Windows updates, the problem should sort itself out.

I'm looking for a Windows Server guru who can help me with this one time issue.

The server is Windows Server 2012 Essentials.

I have the original installation disks, but I'm looking for a solution that is short of nuke the server and reload.

Re: Windows Server 2012 Update Help

      Just to be clear:

I'm not looking for help installing Alpha, I'm looking for help fixing Windows Update on my server.

I know this isn't a Windows Server forum, but there are a lot of good people here and I'm hoping one of them can help.

Windows Server 2012 requires a number of updates to install .NET 4.6. The error on install will direct you to Microsoft KB2919355

        https://support.microsoft.com/en-sg/help/2919355/windows-rt-8-1--windows-8-1--and-windows-server-2012-r2-update-april-2

If you read the prerequisites, you will see you will need to install some other updates before 2919355, specifically 2919442. Follow the directions exactly.

        https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2919442

Users have reported the 2919442 install may then trigger other updates, with one user reporting Windows installed 162 updates. After 2919442 (and updates) install, then you can install 2919355 and the latest .NET will install. Users have also reported that Windows Automatic Updates did not install all of the required updates.

Here is some additional information on the problem

Re: Windows Server 2012 Update Help

          Jerry,

My particular issue is that my Windows Update is completely corrupted. I can't even install an update manually.

I have done extensive research trying to fix it, and in the process I've likely made it worse.

Totally my issue and nothing to do with Alpha. I was just looking for a reference from someone up here.

I have since found a server tech who is trying to fix it.

Re: Windows Server 2012 Update Help

Larry, I ran into this with a windows 7 computer. I tried everything I could find and I couldn't fix the updates. I ended up reinstalling Windows.
This link is for windows 7. It may have enough similarity to server 2012 to give you some ideas of things to try. This seems like a much too common problem.
            Good luck.

Re: Windows Server 2012 Update Help

              Thread update:

I contacted someone who said he could fix Windows Update issues on my Server no problem - 30 minutes tops.

So last Saturday I reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled from scratch ...

The server is back up and running now and updates are working fine.
