Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Copy and Paste in Reports

    I am trying to copy a piece of text in a custom, freeform, report.

    I right click on the text, copy, then move my cursor to a blank space in the same section, right click and paste.

    Nothing happens.

    I've done this a million times in the past, but now it's not working.

    I have closed out of Alpha completely and tried it from a fresh restart.

    I wonder if anyone else is having that issue? I am in the latest version of alpha developer.

    This is likely my first time using this "feature" since upgrading to the latest version.

    Re: Copy and Paste in Reports

    We have experienced a change in copy paste also, mostly in Google Chrome, not so much in Firefox. I've pulled this from the help and release notes:
    from the release notes:

    UX Component - List Control and ViewBox Control - Text Select - A new property 'Allow text select' allows you to enable/disable the ability to select text in a List or ViewBox control. Previously this always defaulted to true. Now, this property defaults to false.

    Also from release notes:

    Chrome Browsers - Making Text Selectable - By default when running a component (Grid or UX) in Chrome, the static text (not the text in textarea or textbox) is not selectable. Alpha Anywhere does this automatically so that when a component is run on a mobile device, you do not unintentionally select text when dragging on different parts of the screen.
    However, in a desktop application you might want the static text to be selectable. Here is how you can do this for a Grid:
    Specify that the Grid has a master template. Then define a custom template using this HTML markup:
    <div style="-webkit-user-select: text; ">
    {grid.Search_Part}
    {grid.Grid_Part}
    {grid.DetailView_Part}
    </div>

    In the case of a UX component, add a Container control around any controls that you want to be selectable and then set the in-line style of the container to:
    -webkit-user-select: text;

    Also, I've noticed that sometimes I can use the right click menu when the Ctrl-C / Ctrl -V doesn't work, and sometimes vice versa.

      Thanks for pointing this out, I thought I was losing my mind the other day.

        Re: Copy and Paste in Reports

        I am specifically talking about copy and paste while editing reports inside the alpha developer - I mean actually trying to copy and paste a piece of text in the header of the report. Not the pdf or html version of the data, but the structure of the report.

        Charles, was your post referring to mine or Pat's post?

        If you are experiencing the same thing as me, I will report it as a potential bug.

          Re: Copy and Paste in Reports

          Larry -- I encountered the same problem this past week. We upgraded to #4770 last month, and I think it is a problem in the report editor. I discovered a workaround to the problem as follows.

          Create a rich text format box (rtf object) somewhere near the top of your report away from the upper left corner. Then copy the text or object as you have been doing and paste it on the rtf object. The pasted text will appear in the upper left of your report where it is supposed to be.

          I haven't reported this to Alpha, but I do think it is a bug.

            I reported this as a bug to Alpha on 2/25/2018. Within 24 hours, Selwyn sent me an email that they will correct the problem in the next release. I think that is an impressively prompt response!
