Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Lookup using a Simple List

    This works great first time, but not with an existing record.
    Example;

    First field value from simple lookup list 1 = "ABC" (Values available are ABC, 123, XYZ)
    On select ABC, fill First field.

    Second field
    Skip if First field <> "ABC" - works fine
    If First field = "ABC" Popup on Entrance and show another simple list (Values available are foot, yard, inch)
    Pops up conditionally on entrance fine, but just the once with a new record.

    If I select a record which had a value of 123 in the First field and change it to ABC, the conditional popup doesn't fire.
    It works with a new record, but not a changed record.

    Any ideas?

    Re: Lookup using a Simple List

    Well it seems to be busted.
    I've tried using Trim, Variables and a straight condition expression.
    It only works with a new record.
    Once the record is saved, changing it to trigger the condition does not work on change.

      Re: Lookup using a Simple List

      What if you use a record or field event field rule to set a flag to t or f based on the same expression? Then use that flag value in your skip rule. It could be the skip expression is not re-evaluating once it has been set to t or f. Tying the condition to an event might fix that. Haven't tried it myself...

        Seems like you should put some switch case code in the actual onchange event for the field as well or simply just there, that way it will run every time.

          Thanks for the suggestions.
          It's not the skip I am overly concerned with. It is the auto popup which I am after.
          I want the field to always show a popup/dropdown list of the options when the field has focus.
          In Field Rules, the setting appears simple.
          If you know how to force a popup/dropdown list on field focus, that would do it but I cannot find that function.

            system_send_keys("{ALT-DOWN}") will toggle a dropdown open and close.
            Maybe in the OnArrive event for the field, you could try something similar to

            Code:
            DIM mode as c
            mode = parentform.mode_get()
            if mode = "CHANGE" then
               if( mycondition = this, system_send_keys("{ALT-DOWN}"),"")
            end if

              Good thinking Ron, I will try that.
              It will need to be in the OnArrive event as the form may not be in Change mode and this could be the first field to be prodded.
              (Brain freeze on the sys send keys) thanks for the nudge.

                Yes, xdialog for entry and edits. This is the kind of stuff that makes me so grateful to have taken the route of using xdialog for virtually all data entry and edits, completely eradicating the use of Field Rules and form field events, but instead using code within xdialogs that can be multiple lines of logic and processing to achieve an endpoint instead of limited to field rules code. Ted, your solution is peanuts (in American jargon that is simple) using xdialog for data entry and edits. But it likely requires a whole new paradigm.
