Default Storing data.rowNumber and using it in a reference. HELP!

I am using a field as a reference with the calculation expression of BatchNumber +"-"+ data.rowNumber.

An example would be if BatchNumber was equal to 3, every time the user enters a new record, i want this to go up in a sequence like 3-1, 3-2, 3-3. Depending on how many records they've entered.

It is being displayed correctly on the grid component itself using the above calculation. However when i look at the data in the SQL table it is being recorded as 3--1, 3--1, 3--1 and is not submitting what is displayed on the form.

Is there any other methods to achieve this?

    Thanks in advance!

    Why?

Does the user actually need to see this number if they can't control it anyway?

There are easier ways to keep things in the order they were entered. A simple incrementing ID will do the trick.

You could even continue to display the calculated expression, just don't save it.

But again, not sure what you are trying to do with it all.

Also, it would be helpful to know what back-end database you are using.
