Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Possible use of "global" tenant with multitenancy

I would like to set up multiple tenants for a SaaS system, with one "common" or "global" tenancy.

This is where data from mobile apps would be stored and reside.
The database would also contain tables to 'point to' real tenants who needed the data.
A cross-tenancy app would then update those real tenants by replication or by setting a pointer back to the data (better)

The app then running in the real tenant would follow the pointer to access data in the "global" tenant.

Is this possible, or just too weird to conceive?

    Hi Martin,

You could probably do what you ask, but it seems overly complicated?
I would suggest you have your tables with the global master data with a global ID, and when you need the data for a new user, you just populate the tables with a copy of the data for that user / tenant.
This can be done very easily by just calling a stored procedure in the database, and it will perform much faster.
Or you can run a job on the database server if possible to populate the data on a schedule

      Hi Martin,

I sell a SaaS framework you might be interested in checking out - http://www.saascoreframework.com.

But overall your conecpt does sound a bit complex. Just have one database and use a company identifier column in each table so that queries are filtered for the correct tenant. If you need global master data don't include the tennant identifier in that table.

Do you have a specific business/legal reason for the model you are proposing?

        Nils, Scott

Thanks for the replies. Putting everything in one database and using identifiers was the 'other option'.
As you both say this is a much simpler structure, but you do have to code the security.
I was wondering if using multitenancy could help by invoking that level of Alpha security.

So far it looks like 100% opinion says to use one physical database

        Thanks again

        Martin

Huh? Where does Alpha have any support for multi-tenant in the security system?

You need a security layer of your own and use AA security more as a permissions feature.

              Hi Martin,

I'd like to hear more about the use case here. Why do you think it should be done the way you envision?

                What Pete said.

There's nothing in Alpha security to prevent you from creating multi-tenancy. Your security groups are global to all tenants, but you filter on company_id or whatever.
