Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

suppress blank row in layout reports

I have a simple two-column multiple row report with the repeated pattern of a static text heading in one row (the left hand cell only) followed by a memo/long text field in the two merged cells of the following row. The two column idea helps with the header.

Some detail fields are null, so I wish to suppress both the heading and detail rows of these pairs. I would have thought this was a common use pattern for reports BUT, the the 'suppress blank' property WILL NOT save as true for me. This is despite following the directions in the release notes to the letter, ie by assigning the property to the whole row rather than just the cell.

Each time I select 'suppress blank,' as true and save, then return to that row - the property has changed back to false. This applies to both the rows with the headings and the detail fields. I have also tried 'case if,' and setting the headings to null in the SQL so that there is definitely nothing there - neither with any success.

The html report version of the report looks fine, but the pdf version prints in a jumbled mess - detail fields lining up under the wrong headings. The 'shrinkable' property does save, but makes no difference to the layout of the pdf reports.

As there are no posts on this subject after about 2012, perhaps I'm missing something! I'd really appreciate a few tips on this little challenge from those who have gone before.

Malcolm, try dynamically setting the row height to 0 if you dont want the row to show. I believe this is how had to do it.

Thanks Alex, I get the row height, but do I set it dynamically in the Row Condition property? If this is the case, and if the field name is 'attendancedetail' could you tell me what the expression in the Row Condition would look like?

        Malcolm,

Please see pic for Editing the Row Condition
        example of Report Condition.png

The row height was not responding in my tests, but the row condition was hiding the row if True

Otherwise you can filter the detail within the report

Re: suppress blank row in layout reports

          Alex,

The report I'm working on is for multiple records, some of which have data in 'attendancedetails' and some don't. For those that don't I want the 'attendancedetails' header and detail rows to not appear/be suppressed. Given that the suppress blank doesn't work, setting the row height to 0 if the 'attendancedetails' field is null sounds a good plan.

          This is what I'm trying:

          DynamicRowHt.PNG

But: this doesn't result in the row height being set to zero if the field is null, and, I can't see an opportunity to specify the row height if the field is not null.

Can you see where am I going wrong?

Re: suppress blank row in layout reports

You should be using double-quotes in your row condition. It has to be an XBasic expression, and the single-quote begins a comment, right? And, I think you just want to put the expression into "Layout / Row Condition", not in the "dynamic" field under "Row Height". All those property boxes labeled "dynamic" need to be ignored; they (the ones I have ever tried to use) are useless and Alpha needs to remove them from their builder, IMHO. You can put something in the "dynamic" box and alpha always moves it up to the box above.

Also, make sure you set the "Layout / Shrinkable" property to true. On my reports, I have "Layout / Suppress Blank" set as false on the row; I don't recall if that setting made any difference when using the two other properties "Row Condition" and "Shrinkable".

I have not worked with making group headers conditional, but I spent a lot of time making rows and columns conditional. If I remember correct, I also had to nearly always select the same means for specifying each cell's contents in a row. If the cell contents were specified using different means across a row then things would go haywire. When I go into my reports now and look at cell content, the "Edit HTML Cell Content" window shows up. I think I got to that point initially by always selecting the radio button labeled "Static HTML" (It is currently the fifth radio button option when inserting new cell content). The term "Static HTML" is rather misleading here, as you can put data fields in it!

Also, I am assuming you are up-to-date on your alpha version. There were quite a few errors a few years back in evaluating row conditions between HTML and PDF output.

Thanks Rich, you wouldn't believe it, but I came back to this and finally got a great report - key: keeping the specs consistent across the rows. Thx
