Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Google Maps Will Not Load Properly

We are in the process of converting over from A5v9 to Alpha Anywhere desktop as well as installing the database on a server running tsplus remotely. There's really no conversion, just setting it up.

Everything is running fine, but when we call a google maps super control it loads SUPER slow and never fully loads the map. If we just run IE on the server and load the same google map it loads fine. There is something in Alpha throttling it. We tried changing the default browser to Chrome but Alpha still opens IE.

    Any thoughts?

I had this. Try Bing maps and see what happens.

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.

      Will do.

      I'll try Bing and Mapquest.

Is it just that easy to switch to Bing or Mapquest? The only option Alpha has built in shows Google Maps... where would you set Mapquest as the option?

Instead of a super control you embed an ActiveX object.

Any update? I need to do this for first time. When I add an ActiveX object to a desktop form, I don't see any mapping objects to select.

I am using a Button with this event
              Code:
              'vURL_googlemap = "http://maps.google.com/maps?q="

              URL_var = "http://"  ..... +vYour_Address

Yes, I do basically the same thing now. Was hoping to try ActiveX to get fancier with multiple pins, etc.

                  Hello,
With all do respect John, the "code" you posted in post #7 is not helpful to anyone that might be on the novice side of things, and frankly I'm not a novice and I haven't a clue what wisdom that is supposed to deliver. Bill, I have/had a fabulous script that uses an activeX control with sizing and other wonderful things that manipulated the maps, however Google closed down the API address and that code is now worthless. I have yet to figure out how to link into Googles API with the key system they have engaged. I hope someone comes up with a solution because this has been a serious loss for us.

Re: Google Maps Will Not Load Properly

Mike, I ended up creating a grid component with a map part that Selwyn showed in a video. Then embedded that component on a form. This is mostly just useful for a storyboard outline of a web system that is being developed.

geocode_address() now requires a Google api key, and that works fine. But you only get 40K free geocodes/month from Google. I have maybe 1M to do.

I am curious how the grid component (with map part) interacts with Google. Before I added my key to the component, the grid displayed fine. But when I scrolled the grid (not going to the map part) I got a google error about no api key. Of course I got that error when going to the map part. The map displayed, but with a development watermark. But back on the grid part, I don't know if that is racking up hits against my free quota.

Wish I could find an alternative for free geocoding, but in my tests Google does seem to have the most accurate results.

                    Bill.

This might help for just geocoding, I've not used it yet so don't have any accuracy claims. https://opencagedata.com/tutorials/m...rom-googlemaps

                            John,

Opencagedata appears to give block level geocoding, which is not accurate precise enough for my needs. (But you get more requests in the free tier than google.)

                              Ted,

What3words appears to be very accurate, but at first blush I did not see how to use it. The developer docs are for conversion between 3 words and lat/lon.

Not sure about pricing. It says if you have more than a batch of 100 lat/lon to convert to 3 words, contact them.

Have you used this for geocoding?

                              Bill.
